WIC offers healthier choices

A new day has arrived for the City's Metro Health WIC program. San Antonio as well as the entire state of Texas will begin offering new healthier food choices to WIC participants beginning October 1. For the first time, participants will be able to obtain healthy food choices such as whole grain products, baby foods and a variety of fruit and vegetables.

In addition, WIC will now be encouraging participants to choose lower fat milk products rather than whole milk for children two and older. They will also be emphasizing the dietary reduction of juice, cheese and eggs for women and children. Soy milk and tofu will also be available for those individuals that have a diagnosed allergy or intolerance to cow's milk or a dietary preference for soy products.

The WIC program changes are gradually being implemented throughout the state. A complete transition should be in place by January 2010.

Metro Health's WIC program serves 45,000 to 50,000 participants per month. For more information on the new changes, contact (210) 225-0213.
