Animal Care Services revises wildlife trapping policy After careful consideration and extensive review of the issues involved, Animal Care Services (ACS) has decided to revise the department’s policy of providing traps for and/or picking up traps used to catch wildlife. ACS Director Jef Hale says the facility is working towards a more humane practice. “Our local wildlife rescue groups are better equipped at handling this issue and educating the populace on how to live with or deter wildlife without resorting to traps.” Citizens should always allow qualified wildlife rescue personnel to handle non-domesticated animals. However, in the interest of public safety, Animal Care Services will continue to accept trapped wildlife brought into the ACS facility. Those animals will then be transferred to local wildlife rescue organizations. While it’s always advisable to leave wild animals alone, Animal Care Services will continue to pick up any wildlife that’s injured a person or pet. Any person or animal who has been bitten or scratched should receive immediate medical attention. Return to dot-gov homepage |
