Pilot program restricts the usage of cell
phones in school zones
The
City Council recently passed an ordinance for a pilot program
restricting the usage of cell phones in 18 school zones.
Under the ordinance that went into effect on September 1,
individuals will be prohibited from talking or text messaging on a
hand-held mobile phone while operating a motor vehicle in a reduced
speed school zone. There will be a 60 day grace period. These
restrictions will apply only during official school days when a
reduced speed zone is in effect. Signs will be visibly posted in
areas were the ordinance is in effect.
Hands-free devices may be used in the
school zones. Also, there are several exemptions to the ordinance
including calling 9-1-1, the fire department, law enforcement, a
doctor's office or health clinic regarding a medical emergency and
calling to prevent injury to a person or property.
As the school semester begins, citizens are asked to remember the
new ordinance as well as the laws for driving through school zones.
So, be cautious and slow down in area school zones.
