City pulls together to help Gustav evacuees
The City of San Antonio once again provided emergency shelter to
hundreds as Hurricane Gustav hit the Gulf Coast causing residents
of Louisiana and the East Texas coast to seek refuge from the storm.
The Alamo
Regional Command Center, a collaborative effort staffed by the City,
County, regional, State, and federal emergency management personnel operated out of the City/County
Emergency Operations Center (EOC).
More than 1200 evacuees and 150 animals sought shelter in the Alamo
city with the majority of them coming from the Beaumont and Port
Arthur areas. Responders worked around the clock to ensure that all
evacuees needs were met. They provided shelter, meals, medical care,
blankets, toiletries and most importantly a safe place to wait out
the storm.
