City and County launch 2010 Census San Antonio campaign

The City of San Antonio and Bexar County officially launched the 2010 Census San Antonio campaign this week. In four months, more than 600,000 households in the area will receive the 2010 Census form by mail. Getting a complete count of all people living in the city and county ensures a portion of $400 billion in federal funding will go directly to local community programs, healthcare, schools and infrastructure.


National League of Cities two-steps into Texas

The City of San Antonio will be hosting the 2009 National League of Cities (NLC) Congress of Cities and Exposition November 10 through the 14 at the Henry B. Convention Center. More than 2,000 elected and appointed officials, local municipal government leaders, and exhibitors from across the country are expected to attend.


On your mark...get set...go to the 2nd Annual Rock-n-Roll Marathon

The San Antonio Rock-n-Roll Marathon and 1/2 Marathon will take place on Sunday, November 15. The event, which is in its second year, will allow runners and walkers to experience a scenic route filled with some of San Antonio's historic landmarks and local musicians. Last year over 30,000 participants, took to the streets of San Antonio.



Texas Recycles Day

San Antonio celebrates Texas Recycles Day on Saturday, November 14, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Woodlawn Lake Park, 1103 Cincinnati. During this free event visitors can learn about the environmental benefits of recycling.


First Annual Diwali Festival of Lights celebration

The City of San Antonio and the India Association of San Antonio (IASA) celebrated the first city-wide Diwali: Festival of Lights at the beginning of the month. The event featured Indian dance, cuisine and a professional fireworks display.


City's STWBC presents You've Got Questions? They've Got Answers

The City's South Texas Women's Business Center (STWBC) presents You've Got Questions? They've Got Answers a roundtable discussion for entrepreneurs and established businesses at all stages. From 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 12, at the Central Library's Story Room, 600 Soledad, five business experts will share their advice and answer questions from attendees about their business strategies.


City repairs damaged Saint Anthony statue

The statue of St. Anthony of Padua, the city's namesake, was restored last month after it was defaced on October 18. The statue sits in Main Plaza in front of the San Fernando Cathedral. The repair work for the 54 year-old marble and granite statue included the placement of metal pins to re-apply the statue's head and the application of a waterproof sealant.


Fall Art Festivals

The Fall Art Festivals will come to an end this month wrapping up a three-month celebration of the arts in San Antonio. The festivals, which included activities highlighting photography, jazz, as well as cultural traditions, will end with fanfare and tasty treats.

Landfill Disposal Day

Free Landfill Disposal Day for San Antonio residents will be held on Saturday, November 7, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. The City's Solid Waste Management Department and the area landfills host this event. Participants must bring their most recent CPS Energy bill to show that they pay the City's residential solid waste fee along with a picture ID when dropping off items at one of the locations. City offices closed for Veterans Day

City offices will be closed Wednesday, November 11, to observe the Veterans Day holiday. Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected. All libraries and Municipal Court will be closed. Golf courses will be open. Police, fire, EMS personnel and animal care officers will be on duty.

Public Meeting for Bulverde Road Corridor

The City of San Antonio's Planning and Development Services Department is hosting a public meeting to discuss the development of commercial design standards for the Bulverde Road Corridor. Voelcker Park Public Hearing
The Parks and recreation Department will host a public hearing to receive comments on the proposed renaming of Voelcker Park to Phil Hardberger Park on Tuesday, November 24, at 7 p.m. on the Campus of the San Antonio Jewish Community, 12500 N.W. Thanksgiving Camps
Thanksgiving Camps with holiday-themed arts and crafts and games offered for youth ages 6 - 14 to be held at 17 Parks and Recreation Centers November 23-25 from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Cost is $2 a day. Participants are asked to bring their own lunch, drink and snack. Centers will be closed Thanksgiving Day and Friday, November 27. Call 207-3000 for a list of sites.

VITA volunteers needed

Its not too early to sign up to be a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program! No experience in tax filing preparation is necessary and training is free! MLK Commission accepting vendor booth applications

The City's Martin Luther King, Jr. (MLK), Commission is accepting applications for vendor booths for the 2010 MLK March and Commemorative Program.
Individuals interested in reserving a food, informational, job fair or corporation booth, must submit an application by
Monday, November 30.
Fire Code Amendments

On October 1, amendments were made and adopted to the IFC (International Fire Code) relative to smoke detectors, sprinklers, and fire alarms. Newly adopted code amendments require the installation of battery operated smoke detectors in existing apartments and dwellings not already equipped with single station or wired smoke detectors. Installation to phase in smoke detectors begins January 1, 2010.
Holiday lights set to shine

Oh, the weather outside is not quite frightful but San Antonians are starting to feel delightful, as the Riverwalk gets set to glow, the holiday parade is ready to flow. The holiday season is about to begin in San Antonio. The festivities begin with the annual Alamo Plaza Christmas Tree Lighting and Celebration from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, November 27. The ceremony is free to the public.

 

The Best in Texas

The San Antonio Police Department's (SAPD) SWAT team placed first during the annual Texas Tactical Police Officers' Association competition, which was held last month in Nacogdoches, Texas. The SAPD team competed against 19 other SWAT teams from across the state. This is the seventh time that the team has taken top honors
