San Antonio to celebrate 20th anniversary
of nation's largest MLK March

Staying consistent with the legacy of Dr. King, more than 100,000 people of all races and ages are expected to make the nearly three-mile march. The diverse crowd will journey through San Antonio’s eastside, bringing a walking tribute to one of the greatest civil rights leaders to a close at Pittman-Sullivan Park, 1101 Iowa.

San Antonio's Convention Center recognized as one of nation's best
The Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center recently received ConventionSouth magazine’s Annual Readers’ Choice Award. The magazine surveyed the nation’s top meeting professionals to find which meeting sites display exemplary creativity and professionalism to incoming meeting groups. The City’s Convention, Sports and Entertainment Facilities Department oversees the convention center as well as the Alamodome, Municipal Auditorium and other similar facilities.

Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
City offices will be closed Monday, January 15, to observe the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday. Garbage and recyclables and brush will not be collected. All libraries and Municipal Court will be closed. Golf courses will be open. Police, fire and EMS personnel, and animal care officers will be on duty.

Community Bond Committee meetings resume
Residents invited to offer input on $550 million bond program


Beginning January 8, four Community Bond Committees will continue to consider projects proposed as part of the City’s 2007-2012 Bond Program. The committees were established to obtain community input and analyze potential projects to be included as part of the $550 million bond program set for voter consideration on May 12. Each of the committees met at least once in December before taking a break for the holidays.

Give your tree new life after the holidays

Residents are asked to take part in a holiday “tree-dition” by recycling their fresh cut Christmas trees on Wednesday, January 10. Trees should be placed out curbside no later than 7:00 a.m. on this special scheduled collection day.


Free Landfill Disposal Day -
Start your spring cleaning early

If you are looking to dispose of brush, furniture, old appliances and other bulky items, then make plans to stop by one of four convenient locations on Saturday, February 3, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. to dispose of these items for free. Landfill Disposal Day is an opportunity for residents who may not be scheduled for City brush collection service in the near future to get rid of lumber, remodeling debris, furniture, appliances, mattresses, brush, passenger car tires and other junk at no cost.

San Antonio gains top honors
for National Night Out

Once again the citizens of San Antonio and surrounding areas made National Night Out a huge success. San Antonio was brought to national attention and chosen number one in the nation for cities with a population of 300,000 or more. This is an effort that started in February and ended in September when the National winner is chosen. There were 778 registered parties and over 150,000 individuals who took part in the event.
