Haven brings hope for area homeless

Construction is underway on Haven for Hope, a unique facility that will provide a wide range of social services to meet the needs of San Antonio’s homeless community in a “one-stop” setting.
 


New members join City Council. Bond propositions pass

Run-off elections for two seats on the City Council will be held Tuesday, June 12. Council seats for District 5 and District 8 will be decided on that date. The remaining nine Council seats were decided as part of the election on May 5.
 


Library introduces check-out receipt service

The San Antonio Public Library has changed the way it checks out books and other library materials. Instead of a due date stamped on a sticker affixed to an item, library customers will receive printed receipts detailing the items borrowed, together with their due dates. Upon request, patrons will also be able to obtain receipts showing all materials they currently have checked out.

San Antonio has been blessed with frequent rainfall this spring. However, while the rainfall is good for the aquifer, it also causes grass and weeds to grow at a rapid pace. If you own property and have neglected its appearance, you could be in store for a visit from a Code Compliance officer.

Cool off in one of the City's 23 outdoor swimming pools open from June 2 through Aug. 5. Pools are open Tuesday through Sunday and admission is free. Swimming lessons, water aerobics, and private rentals are available.
San Antonio International lauded for customer satisfaction
San Antonio International Airport (SAT) was named the second best small division airport in North America for customer satisfaction according to a recent survey by JD Power & Associates. SAT was topped only by Houston Hobby for facilities with fewer than 10 million passengers per year. Customer satisfaction remains high at SAT despite a major expansion project that includes new terminals, a new parking garage and new roadways.

VITA brings great returns to city, low income taxpayers

Local residents are expected to receive more than $53 million in tax refunds through the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program, with an average return of $1,616 for these working families. Eligible taxpayers took advantage of VITA, which offered electronic filing for faster refunds, and saved low-income families an average of $166 in tax preparation fees. VITA is administered by the Department of Community Initiatives.

The City of San Antonio again has joined forces with residents and several local corporate and human service organizations to collect and distribute electric box fans to help elderly citizens who may suffer most from high summer temperatures.
City teams up with residents
to crack down on bandit signs


The City is on a mission to combat bandit signs and is enlisting the help of neighborhood associations and local business owners to help remove illegally posted signs in public rights-of-way. Code Compliance has developed Operation S.O.S. (Sick of Signs), a tracking system to help residents record the bandit signs they remove in their neighborhoods.
