Luminaria 2009

Celebrate the arts at Luminaria on Saturday, March 14 . Luminaria, which means a small clever light that conjures up creative ideas and inspires waves of innovation, is an all day celebration that will highlight San Antonio's premier artists and art organizations through visual, performing, multi-media, theatre, dance, music and other artistic forms.

City gets set to celebrate 13th Annual Cesar E. Chavez March

The 13th Annual Cesar E. Chavez March for Justice is scheduled for Saturday, March 28. Festivities will begin with a community program at 11:00 a.m. at the Avenida Guadalupe, 1321 El Paso. The march kicks off at 1:00 p.m. with Grand Marshal Arturo Rodriguez, the president of the United Farm Workers of America, leading the way.


Enforcement week is coming

The final phase of the 3rd Annual Great Texas Warrant Roundup is set to begin on Monday, March 9. Enforcement Week, as the time span is titled, is the five day period that individuals with outstanding warrants will be roundup and brought to court to address their citations before a Municipal Court Judge.


This spring, make sure your cleaning is done right
Dispose of household hazardous waste properly at this month's HHW mobile event


If you are getting ready to do your annual spring cleaning, make sure you do it right. When you are finish using household cleaners, paint, lawn and garden products, or automotive fluids this spring, remember not to pour them down the drain, empty them in the trash, or dispose of them on the ground. Instead, bring them to the City's Solid Waste Management Department's mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) on Saturday, March 14 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Memorial Stadium, 4002 Roosevelt.
 


Guinness Dyeing O' the River Green & St. Paddy's Day Parade

Celebrate the luck of the Irish March 13-15. Floats release 50 pounds of environmentally friendly green dye into the San Antonio River. The event transforms the 2.5 mile river into a miniature Emerald Isle where a proclamation is read, temporarily re-naming the river "The River Shannon". On Sunday, March 15, beginning at 1:00p.m., the annual St. Paddy's Day River Parade provides everyone on the River Walk an opportunity to celebrate St. Paddy.

Spring Break on the Back 40
Enjoy spring break in Hemisfair Park. UTSA's Institute of Texan Cultures presents Spring Break on the Back 40 from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. March 10-13. Families are invited to learn how the earliest settlers in Texas spent their spring breaks. For more info call (210) 458-2291.

In an effort to recognize the achievements made by local builders in constructing energy and water efficient buildings, the City is proud to announce the 1st Annual Green Building Awards. 3rd Annual Kite Festival & Dog Fair

The third annual free event takes place on Saturday, March 21 from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. at McAllister Park. The event will showcase live music, arts and crafts, dogs and a sky full of kites. For more info, visit www.safriendsoftheparks.org.
Houston Street Fair
The Houston Street Fair will take place on Saturday, March 28. The theme for this month's fair is "Fiesta Fest". The fair features hand-made art and crafts by artists and artisans from San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Not to mention there is plenty to eat and drink. In response to the growing number of emerging small businesses in San Antonio, the Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) and the South Texas Women’s Business Center (STWBC) are co-hosting a series of seminars.

Flood Awareness Week

This month, the City will join the rest of the country in observing National Flood Awareness Week, March 16 through March 20. Flooding is a coast to coast threat throughout the year and although it seems that San Antonio usually experiences dry conditions, it also has a long history of deadly flooding.
 

Pick up a book and read

Read a good book lately? Join the San Antonio Public Library and participate in the Big Read 2009. This year, all San Antonio and Bexar County residents are invited to read, think about and discuss the timeless novel, Fahrenheit 451.Written in 1953, the short novel written by Ray Bradbury, fired imaginations around the world.

Come Out for a Breath of Fresh Air on Fresh Air Friday

In preparation for the 2009 Ozone Season, the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) and the City of San Antonio are hosting the third annual Fresh Air Friday event  from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Friday, April 3 at Main Plaza, 115 N. Main, to promote walking to lunch in the downtown area rather than driving to another location.
