Department of Community Initiatives to meet with parents for Head Start services

The City of San Antonio continues to provide information and outreach to families of children currently enrolled in Head Start. On April 9, City Council approved contracts and new Head Start providers are prepared to offer improved early education, health, nutrition and family support services throughout Bexar County beginning on August 24.
 


Get out and vote!

San Antonio residents are encouraged to get out and vote on Saturday, May 9. Citizens who are registered will be eligible to vote for the Mayor and their respective City Council representative. Early voting for the election continues through Tuesday, May 5. Early voting sites include the Bexar County Elections Office along with 36 other locations.


National Preservation Month
May is National Preservation Month. The theme for this year's celebration is "This Place Matters." Preservation Month was designed to raise awareness about the power historic preservation has to protect and enhance our homes, neighborhoods and communities. Movies in the Park

The Parks and Recreation Department presents Madagascar II. On May 16 the fun begins at  6:30 p.m. at San Pedro Park, 1315 San Pedro Avenue. Plenty of fun for the entire family including moon bounces, face painting and special visits from friendly local mascots. Picnic baskets are welcome but concessions will be available. Memorial  Day Holiday
City offices will be closed Monday, May 25, to observe the Memorial Day holiday. Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected. All libraries and Municipal Court will be closed. Golf courses will be open. Police, fire, EMS personnel and animal care officers will be on duty.
Houston Street Fair
The Houston Street Fair will take place on Saturday, May 30. The theme for this month's fair is "Ice Cream Fest". The fair features hand-made art and crafts by artists and artisans from San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Not to mention there is plenty to eat and drink. Building safety: Where you Live, Work and Play

When entering a house or building, most people don’t think about whether the structure is safe. Fortunately, City employees think about building and fire safety everyday. To raise awareness of the importance of building safety, the City’s Planning and Development Services Department is recognizing Building Safety Week:  May 4 through May 8.
 
City manager appoints two new executives

City Manager Sheryl Sculley has appointed Frank Miller as Aviation Director, effective May 18. Miller will oversee the day to day operations at the San Antonio International Airport and a $500 million expansion project, which includes two new terminal facilities and a new bi-level roadway system at the City’s airport. The program also outlines a $3.5 million runway extension for Stinson Municipal Airport.
Register for National Night Out 2009

The San Antonio Police Department invite residents and neighborhood associations interested in participating in National Night Out (NNO) 2009 to register for the event now, by signing up online at www.sanantonio.gov/sapd.
Next mobile HHW event scheduled for June

The City's third mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) is scheduled to be held on Saturday, June 6 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at Farris Stadium, 8400 N. loop 1604.
