City approves budget, begins new fiscal year

City Council approved a $1.8 billion budget in September that provides for increased street maintenance and addresses critical service issues by providing for more than 150 additional police officers, additional firefighters, paramedics and code compliance officers, and increases the City’s financial reserves. The City’s 2006-07 Fiscal Year began October 1.

City libraries to close for one day
All San Antonio Public Library locations will be closed Friday, October 6, for staff training. Books and videos may be returned to the book drop at any location.

Good news: City's financial health results in debt savings
The City of San Antonio has successfully refunded existing debt to achieve interest cost savings that will reduce debt payments by more than $10 million on bonds originally sold for the expansion of the Convention Center.
Excellence: City video projects
named two of state's best
The Texas Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors (TATOA) selected City-produced videos as two of the best programs among 85 entries from municipalities across the state. A special edition of The HALL which focused on hurricane relief efforts last year, and a video highlighting the City's Emergency Housing Repair Program, won awards. The TATOA award marks the eighth award for The HALL since 2002.

City, County leaders preview new Emergency Operations Center

City and County officials recently offered a preview of the new $24.5 million Emergency Operations Center (EOC) currently under construction at Brooks City-Base. The center, scheduled to be completed in December 2007, will bring together City of San Antonio and Bexar County emergency management offices into one shared facility.


City to roll out automated garbage and recycling soon

As early as this fall, San Antonio residents will begin seeing the City’s new automated garbage and recycling collection system rolling into their neighborhood. This system has many enhancements allowing garbage and recycling collection to be more convenient for residents while improving the appearance of neighborhoods on collection day.

Animal Care Services revises wildlife trapping policy

After careful consideration and extensive review of the issues involved, Animal Care Services has decided to revise the department’s policy of providing traps for and/or picking up traps used to catch wildlife.

Code enforcement cracking down on illegally-posted signs

Work from home; lose weight fast; lawn mowing service; homes for sale… these are just some of the messages citizens may see on signs tacked to utility poles or staked in the ground along the public right-of-way. These illegally posted signs, known as bandit signs, can block the view of motorists, creating a potential safety hazard. These signs can also create litter and clutter along the city’s roadways.

Applications sought for City Boards and Commissions

San Antonio residents are encouraged to get involved in their local government by serving on a City board or commission. Applications are being sought for seats on a variety of At-large and District boards and commissions.
