Proposed FY 2010 budget

The FY 2010 Proposed Budget will be presented to City Council on Thursday, September 17, for adoption. For the past few weeks, San Antonio residents have provided their input on the City’s proposed budget by attending community hearings in each Council district. The hearings began August 17 and finished September 1.


City receives $1 million TPW grant for Voelcker Park

Last month, the City of San Antonio was awarded a $1 million Urban Indoor recreation Grant for the construction of a 4,000-square-foot Urban Ecology Center at Voelcker Park, 12000 N.W. Military Drive.



2009 Fall Art Festivals

September marks the beginning of the 2009 Fall Art Festivals, a three-month celebration of the arts in San Antonio. The festivals which include activities highlighting photography, jazz, wine and food, as well as cultural traditions, will kick off this month with Fotoseptiembre and Jazz'sAlive. Fotoseptiembre is a month-long celebration of photographic arts. Exhibits take place across the city and in the Texas Hill Country.
 

Labor Day Holiday City Services Schedule
City offices will be closed Monday, September 7, to observe the Labor Day holiday. Garbage, recyclables and brush will be collected. All libraries and Municipal Court will be closed. Golf courses will be open. Police, fire, EMS personnel and animal care officers will be on duty.

VITA volunteers needed

It’s not too early to sign up to be a volunteer with the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program! No experience in tax filing preparation is necessary and training is free! Citizen's Academy
The Housing and Neighborhood Services Department will hold a Citizen's Academy on Saturday, September 19, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Northeast Service Center, 10303 Toolyard. This event is free and open to the public.  For more info, call (210) 207-4453 or email steven.lopez@sanantonio.gov.
Gardens by Moonlight
This annual event has become one of San Antonio's favorites! The Garden is filled with several popular, high-charged live music performances, delicious treats, and great atmosphere. San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place. 207-3250. For ticket information, www.sabot.org.

Houston Street Fair

The Houston Street Fair will take place on Saturday, September 26. The theme for this month's fair is "Animal Kingdom". The fair features hand-made art and crafts by artists and artisans from San Antonio and the surrounding areas. Not to mention there is plenty to eat and drink. Make the pledge to recycle

Saturday, September 19, will be declared "Recycle Day" as the City's Solid Waste Management Department host its fourth mobile household hazardous waste event (HHW) but with a twist. At the event, residents will not only be able to recycle HHW items they have lying around but they will also be able to recycle gently used clothing, gently used furniture, and all recyclable materials accepted in the City's automation program.
Volunteers needed to wipeout graffiti

Calling all volunteers! The City is looking for a few good volunteers to take part in the Housing and Neighborhood Services Department’s Graffiti Wipeout Days. Since the event continues to grow, the City has decided to declare three days of graffiti eradication for their Sixth Annual Graffiti Wipeout. Civic groups, churches, schools and businesses are invited to wipeout graffiti in San Antonio.
Early bird special extended- 2009 Community Development Summit

The early bird registration for the 2009 Community Development Summit, scheduled for September 16 and September 17 at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center, 200 E. Market, has been extended until Thursday, September 10.
 

Healthy Bites

Last month, the City's Metro Health Department in conjunction with local restaurant Pico de Gallo unveiled the restaurant’s new healthier kid’s menu. This is an effort to help lower spiraling obesity and diabetes rates within San Antonio. The selection of improved options is the first initiative of the Healthy Restaurants Coalition, spearheaded by Metro Health in partnership with the San Antonio Restaurant Association (SARA) and other stakeholders.
