SUSTAINABILITY TASK FORCE
Executive Committee

Purpose:In response to the June 11, 2008 “B” Session on the City’s sustainability plan development, the Sustainability Task Force (STF) was created to collaborate on City-wide efforts to integrate sustainability principles within municipal operations. The STF will establish a planning, monitoring and technology transfer framework based on department level innovations. The STF promotes the City’s sustainability goals and strengthens existing and develops new policies and initiatives.

Mission Statement: The goal of the STF is to build upon existing and to create new department efforts that foster a collaborative City-wide effort to integrate the triple bottom line of sustainability: environmental, economic and social advantages into municipal operations.

Implementation Protocol: Implementation of the STF depends on participation and collaboration between multiple functions of City government, encouraging the infusion of innovative ideas from all levels through a partnership approach. The STF will provide a coordinated system to examine and implement sustainable best practices within all levels of City operations. STF member recommendations will be approved and referred for final approval and implementation according to the consent of the majority of the voting members. STF members may present policy and project recommendations to the Office of Environmental Policy to examine the feasibility and qualify its sustainability benefits prior to its presentation to the STF.

Current Projects: Plug-In Electric Hybrid Study - CPS Energy’s Energy Research and Technology Initiatives (ERTI) department will partner with the City of San Antonio’s Fleet Maintenance and Operations Department on the conversion of two late-model (2004 or newer) Toyota Prius vehicles and the installation of six charging stations.

Hemisfair Water Fountain Conservation Project – San Antonio Water System and Downtown Operations Department presented this project to utilize an environmentally-friendly water treatment system with a non-potable water source. The completion of this project will save over 36 million gallons of water and allow operation during drought.

Project Recommendation Review Process: Recommendations for new projects can be submitted on the attached “Policy Initiation Form” to Laurence Doxsey for presentation to the STF.
