Bike Facility Design Guide

Bike Lane:

The City of San Antonio’s Bicycle and Pedestrian Program, part of the Traffic Engineering Division, is dedicated to improving and enhancing bicycling and walking as a safe and viable transportation option. This is achieved through planning, engineering and policy development, as well as educating the community and agencies about bicycle transportation.

Bike Route:

A roadway, which is open to both bicycle and motor vehicle travel that has been designated by signage, not marked, as a preferred route for bicycle use. Routes may be located on existing roadways, streets with curb lanes, or roads with a paved shoulder that meet the minimum lane width requirement. (Minimum outside lane width of 14 feet)

Multiuse or Shared Use Path:

A multiuse path separated from the roadway by an open space or barrier. Shared use paths may also be used by pedestrians, skaters, wheelchair users, joggers and other non-motorized users. Multiuse path is the safest facility for bicyclists. (Minimum 8 feet wide; Recommended 10 to 12 feet wide)

Improved Shoulder or Edge Line:

The paved portion of a roadway to the right of a white edge line, which functions as a bike lane without signage or pavement markings. The City of San Antonio uses this treatment when on street parking is prevalent or for short distances.

Bicycle Path:

Same as multiuse path but specifically constructed and assigned for the exclusive use of bicyclists

Bike Rack Project

The City of San Antonio has recently finished a project to install 25 bicycle racks throughout San Antonio. Two types of racks were installed: Barbara Levine design and the w-shape.

A bicycle rack design competition was held in which artist Barbara Levine’s bicycle rack design was chosen the winner. These bicycle racks have been installed at the following locations: Municipal Courts, Municipal Plaza Building, Southtown, the Carver Center, the Alamodome, and the Convention Center.

The more common w-shape bicycle racks may be seen around town at locations such as public libraries, city parks, and other destinations such as the Municipal Auditorium, Sunset Depot, and the Bexar County Courthouse. Five additional bike racks will be placed later this summer at the Witte Museum, Main Library, Brooks City Base, and San Pedro Library.
