City and CPS Energy set to launch Weatherization Program

The City of San Antonio is partnering with CPS Energy to launch Casa Verde SA, a weatherization assistance program for low-income households. The program, which was made possible through federal stimulus funds, is designed to assist low-income individuals by increasing the energy efficiency of their houses and reducing their utility bills. Priority for the weatherization program will be given to the elderly, families with young children, individuals with disabilities, households with high energy costs relative to income, and households with high energy consumption.

Casa Verde SA will be launched this Saturday, December 12, at a community event in Dignowity Hill. The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. at the Carver Cultural Community Center, 226 N. Hackberry. At the event residents can learn more about Casa Verde SA as well as receive information from a number of other social service programs.

Households at or below 200 percent of the federally determined poverty level whose homes have adequate structural conditions will qualify for Casa Verde SA. Priority households will receive weatherization measures that improve their energy efficiency. The City has initially targeted three areas for the program -- Dignowity Hill, the Roosevelt Corridor and the West side, however; everyone in the city is eligible to apply.

Approximately, 1,400 homes in San Antonio will be weatherized under this federally supported program over a two-year period. Homes to be weatherized under this program must meet basic structural and safety standards as required by federal and state guidelines.

For additional program information, call 353-CASA (2272) or go to http://www.cpsenergy.com/Services/Casa_Verde_SA/

2010 Department of Defense Sustainable Installations Workshop

January 11-14

Sustainability is becoming one of the most important challenges facing DoD. How we plan, design, use and maintain our facilities and installations is more important now than ever. The January 11-14, 2010 Sustainable Sites – Sustainable Installations Workshop will address installation sustainability issues.

This 3-dayworkshop is a collaborative event between the AFCEE, City of San Antonio, Port San Antonio, and participants. Tuesday, January 12 will be exceptionally interesting. Six AFCEE Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) will host “AFCEE Live” where you’ll hear all about Air Force programs — everything from air and water quality to natural and cultural resources! Plus the architecture and planning programs will be thrown in for good measure. Immediately following the workshop, we’ll be hosting a one-day charrette to give you a real-world planning opportunity in which to apply a variety of sustainable factors.

To reserve a government-rate room at the Four Points by Sheraton, call 210-351-333 and giving them the workshop code — AFCEE #AFA098. View hotel accommodations and amenities at www.fourpoints.com. Reserve your free training slot by emailing Ted Shierk

Bicycle Master Plan Update RFQ

San Antonio BikesOEP is seeking respondents to propose an update and implementation plan for the existing San Antonio-Bexar County Bicycle Master Plan, which was adopted by City Council in 2005. The update will focus on measurable infrastructure and policy goals to institutionalize cycling as an alternative form of transportation, increase connectivity, and prioritize projects that improve the network while communicating effectively with the public. The RFQ can be accessed at http://epay.sanantonio.gov/RFPListings/Content.aspx?id=712. Proposals are due January 5, 2010.

Bike Share/Rental and Bike Tours Program RFQ

Creative business proposals are being sought to augment bicycling opportunities in and around downtown San Antonio. With the goals of increasing the visibility of bicycles in the downtown core and providing more choices for residents and visitors, respondents are asked to propose ways to offer automated bike sharing stations, bike rental and cyclist amenities such as a repair shop or equipment storage facility, and/or programs that offer services for tourists to some of our existing bicycle infrastructure and cultural attractions. The RFQ can be accessed at http://epay.sanantonio.gov/RFPListings/Content.aspx?id=720 and proposals are due January 15.
