Mayor Castro Launches Green Jobs Leadership Council
On September 23, Mayor Julian Castro announced the formation of a Green Jobs Leadership Council, a high-level group of stakeholders to chart a course for San Antonio in the new green economy by connecting public policy to job creation.
The Council held its first meeting Tuesday, September 22, and began discussing a comprehensive and integrated approach to the development of green jobs in San Antonio, as part of a larger vision for building a green economy. The Council will build upon the report "Building Green Skills: A Green Jobs Program for San Antonio" completed by the Center for Adult and Experiential Learning and commissioned by the San Antonio City Council. One recommendation in that report was the creation of the Council.
"San Antonio is committed to being a leader in investment and training in the green economy," Mayor Castro said. "This Council will focus not only on developing programs that provide the skills and training for the green jobs of the future, but also on creating new markets for those jobs."
Immediate projects of the Council could include coordinating green jobs curriculum among educational stakeholders, developing a mechanism for employer demand and creating an information clearinghouse for consumers, employers and job seekers. The Council will likely meet for six to nine months before bringing back a series of recommendations to the Mayor and City Council.

OEP and COSA News
Alamo Colleges, City of San Antonio Produce Campus Bike and Pedestrian Maps

Bike and pedestrian one-page maps for quarter mile (walking) and 2 ½ mile (cycling) buffer zones around Palo Alto College, San Antonio College and St. Philip’s College were developed through a joint project of the Office of Environmental Policy and the Alamo Colleges. The project was funded by the Metropolitan Planning Organization. The maps display bike facilities and sidewalks, including “friendly” routes to schools, VIA bus facilities, and neighborhood attractions such as, grocery and convenience stores, pharmacies, parks, libraries, and museums, The maps are available in both print (at student unions and administrative offices) and electronic versions. The maps are a visual reminder of the amenities that are close enough to campus to comfortably walk or bike to in about 15 minutes or less.
The goal of the Office of Environmental Policy’s Bicycle Program, is “to increase bicycle ridership for daily travel and improve cycling safety by making our network accessible, direct and continuous.”
Electric Vehicle Stakeholders Host Nissan
On September 11, OEP coordinated a meeting of Electric Vehicle (EV) stakeholders for a presentation from Nissan regarding the plug-in electric vehicle, LEAF (“Leading, Environmentally Friendly, Affordable, Family Car”), which is scheduled for a late 2010 / early 2011 release date. The LEAF is an all-electric vehicle (no gasoline engine), and is expected to be able to travel over 100 miles on a single charge.
The Office of Environmental Policy is working to prepare San Antonio for the introduction of electric vehicles (both plug-in and plug-in hybrid) expected from multiple manufacturers over the next 1 to 3 years. OEP is examining the City’s readiness for providing charging infrastructure in public and private locations, evaluating building code and permitting processes for their impact on the installation of home charging stations, and determining electric vehicles’ impact on the lifecycle costs of municipal fleet ownership. San Antonio is working to be a leader as this new technology becomes more available and affordable.

The Town Hall will be recorded and broadcasted during The Newsmaker Hour, on Friday, October 30, at 7pm on KSTX 89.1 FM.
The KSTX Town Hall is on an ongoing series of forums designed to engage the community on a wide range of issues impacting San Antonio.
