Youngsters with a passion for art have the opportunity to put it to the test by participating in the Parks and Recreation Department Christmas in San Antonio Student Art Contest.

The 33rd Annual Christmas Card Contest seeks festive artwork for the cover of the City's Official Christmas Card. Official rules and entry forms are available in late August each year at any Parks and Recreation community center, public library, or download the entry forms by visiting www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec . The deadline for the 2008 contest is Oct. 3, 4:30 p.m. Bring or mail entries to Parks and Recreation Department, 7th Floor, Catholic Life Insurance Building, 1635 N.E. Loop 410. San Antonio, Texas 78209.

Art can be entered in the contest by students, grades 4 - 12, who are enrolled in schools, public, parochial, and private, or home schooled with a San Antonio metropolitan area mailing address. Several pieces of artwork will be chosen to be displayed at the Central Library for the month of November and the San Antonio Children's Museum in December. Winning artists will be recognized by the Mayor at the Awards Ceremony and honored during the Contest's Main Gallery Exhibit Reception. 2007 Card Art Contest

The winners of the 2007 Christmas Card art contest include Alexa Finley, 16, of Clark High School the overall winner, which become the city's official 2007 Christmas card. Alexa's teacher is William Peavy.

First place in the high school division went to Lorenzo Mireles, 14, of San Antonio Christian Schools, taught by Gail Smith. Edwin Calderon, 13, of Harris Middle School, snagged first place in the middle school division. His teacher is Lacey Trevino. In the elementary school division, Crystal Tijerina, 12, of Carroll Bell Elementary, is the first place winner. Her teacher is Margaret Villanueva.

The contest is open to all students, grades 4-12, who are enrolled in a public, parochial or private school that has a San Antonio mailing address. Home schooled children; grades 4-12, with a San Antonio physical address may also enter.

First, second and third place are be awarded in each of three categories. Grades 4 and 5 are judged in the Elementary School category, grades 6 through 8 in the Middle School category and grades 9 through 12 in the High School category. The overall winner will receive $150. First place winners will receive $50. Second place will receive $30 and third place $20.

Pick up a list of rules and an official entry form for the Christmas in San Antonio Art Contest at any Parks and Recreation Community Center, the Catholic Life Insurance Building, 1635 N.E. Loop 410, suite 700, any public library branch or the San Antonio Children’s Museum, 305 E. Houston. Entry forms can also be downloaded from the web at www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec.

The cards will be available for sale at $7 for a box of 10. Christmas in San Antonio cards can be ordered by calling the Parks and Recreation Department at 207-3133. The cards will also be available at all four City of San Antonio Community Link Service Centers and at the Parks and Recreation Offices in the Catholic Life Insurance Building, 1635 N.E. Loop 410, Suite 700.
