First Saturday Programs 2013

Get close to nature with a variety of programs at our Natural Area parks. Here are the details and the schedule:
Reservations are suggested; walks occasionally change. Call: 210-207-5320 or email peggy.spring@sanantonio.gov Participants are limited to 15 per hike. Meet near the restrooms. A donation of $2 per person, max $6/family is suggested.

Jan. 5, 2013
Eisenhower Park 10 a.m. – 12 noon
May 4, 2013 Eisenhower Park 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Limestone Legacy Walk
19399 Military Hwy 78256 - Join us for a walk over the Edwards Aquifer recharge zone since Eisenhower Park is located where the Edwards limestone is exposed at the surface. Come learn about our 100 million rocks and how they shape our lives.

June 1, 2013 Friedrich Park 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Animal Signs Walk
21395 Milsa 78256 - When people come to the park they always ask, "Where are the animals?" Well, the animals are hiding and are nocturnal and can be unnoticeably small, but we can see ‘signs’ of their presence even if we don’t see them. Come have a look!

July 6, 2013 Eisenhower Park 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Family walk with crafts
19399 Military Hwy 78256 - This walk is planned for families with young children and will proceed at a leisurely pace on the paved trails of the park. There will be lots of time for an up close and personal inspection of nature! Make a nature craft after the hike.

Aug. 3, 2013 Crownridge Canyon 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Tree Muses Walk
7222 Luskey 78256 - Master Naturalist, Ron Tullius, will again lead this leafy hike in Crownridge Canyon. Our focus will be the largest members of the plant kingdom. There’s such a diversity of tree bark, leaves and growth habit that you can’t be bored on this walk. It’s still warm around here; don’t forget a full water bottle for each person!

Sept. 7, 2013 Friedrich Park 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.
Blowin’ in the Wind Walk
21395 Milsa 78256 - In an area that lacks much surface water, the invention of the windmill to draw water from an aquifer was a blessing. On this spring hike, we will enjoy the fresh vegetation and visit the windmill at Friedrich Park. You’ll get a chance to try our new working model of a windmill pump! It may be warm so don’t forget to bring water to drink!

Oct 5, 2013 Eisenhower Park 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Rottin’ Things Walk
19399 Military Hwy 78256 - It’s a rotten, dirty job but someone has to do it! As we walk the trails of Eisenhower Park, we will observe many natural features but we will focus on decomposition, those processes and critters that turn dead leaves and such back into soil. We’ll also look for lichens and other cooperating critters in the park.

Nov. 2, 2013 Crownridge Canyon 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Family walk with crafts
7222 Luskey 78256 - This walk is planned for families with young children and will proceed at a leisurely pace on the paved trails of the park. It’s so very important to get young children out in nature! Make a fall craft after the hike.

Dec. 7, 2013 Friedrich Park 10 a.m. – 12 noon
Friedrich Fall Color Walk
21395 Milsa 78256 - Have you ever noticed the alternating layers of vegetation color here in the fall? As we walk, we will solve the mystery of why you can look at the ‘balcones’ of the hills and see a red and green layer cake of color. And that’s not the only sign of winter’s approach – see how many more you can find!
