Salado Creek Greenway North (McAllister Park to Loop 410) Dedicated

Boardwalk named in honor of fallen soldier Christopher Morningstar

Date: Aug. 21, 2010
Contact: Jody Mayes Garcia 207-4207

City Councilman John G. Clamp, District 10, Councilwoman Elisa Chan, District 9, along with members of the Christopher Morningstar family and Parks and Recreation Department representatives today dedicated the Salado Creek Greenway North (McAllister Park to Loop 410 Segment). The new greenway segment features four miles of trail among scenic natural landscapes and includes a unique 3,400-foot boardwalk that runs along a Salado Creek wetland area by Nacogdoches Road.

The Morningstar Boardwalk honors Army Staff Sergeant Christopher Morningstar, a native of San Antonio and a soldier loved and respected by the troops he led. On Feb. 5, 2006 in Al Husayniyah, Iraq, SSG Morningstar, 27, gave his life for his country. The Boardwalk is decorated with a sign honoring SSG Morningstar and an inlay of red, white and blue ceramic tile topped by a star.

Trailheads are located near the McAllister Dog Park off Starcrest and at the south end of LBJ Park on Nacogdoches Road, where the ceremony was held. In 2011, the trail will be linked to the Salado Creek Greenway North segment that runs from the Tobin Park trailhead at Loop 410 to Rittiman Road. In the future the trail will be linked westward along the new segments of Wurzbach Parkway.

A total of 23 miles of developed Greenway trails are now open to the public, including the Salado Creek Greenway North from Huebner to Blanco Road, the Salado Creek Greenway South from Rigsby Road to South Side Lions Park, the Leon Creek Greenway from Babcock to Bandera Road and the Medina River Greenway located east of State Highway 16 on the south side of San Antonio. An additional 14 miles of trail are currently under construction and more are being designed.

The Linear Park Development Program for Salado Creek, Leon Creek, Medina River and the San Antonio River is funded through a sales tax approved by voters in 2000 and 2005. Over 1,100 acres of property along San Antonio Creekways have been acquired for the program, with another 200 acres planned for acquisition.
