With more than 200 parks to choose from there’s no time like the present to schedule quality family time in the great outdoors. Many of your City parks offer picnic facilities, playscapes, sports fields and walking trails for everyone to enjoy.

Get in Shape for the New Year
Salado Creek South greenway Get Active, Get Fit and Step up to Recreation – that’s our motto and working out in a City Park is even easier since several parks now have outdoor fitness equipment. Best of all it’s totally FREE! To view the list of parks visit www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/ fitness_in_the_parks.aspx. Whether you enjoy walking, running or cycling, you can stay active by exploring 33 miles of Greenway Trails. Discover an ever growing network of trails offering limitless opportunities to get active and fit while connecting with nature. If you're looking for the best fitness deal in town, you need look no farther than the Enrique Barrera Community Center located at 5800 Old Highway 90 West. It features a 4,800 square foot multi-purpose room, a 1,700 square foot aerobic room, and a 1,700 square foot fitness center featuring exercise equipment and a wellness library. Equipment includes four treadmills, three elliptical machines, two multi-station workout areas, one recumbent bike, an adaptive motion trainer, functional training system glide machine, a rower, weightlifting bench and dumbbells ranging from five to 100 pounds. Learn Something New Are you or someone in your family interested in learning more about plants and trees, or birds, butterflies and snakes? If so, our Natural Areas offer an abundance of educational programs and interpretive nature walks that both young and old can enjoy. Visit www.sanantonio.gov/parksandrec/calendar.aspx for a list of all the exciting things going on in Phil Hardberger Park, the Medina River Natural Area, Crownridge Canyon, Friedrich Wilderness and Eisenhower Parks. You will be amazed at what you can learn.

Go Green!
Make 2012 your greenest year ever – start by turning your Christmas tree into nutrient-rich mulch for FREE. Hours are 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Jan. 7, 8, 14 and 15 at 20 sites including Copernicus Park, 5003 Lord Rd.; Gilbert Garza Park, 1450 Mira Vista; Friesenhahn Park, 15701 O’Conner Rd.; Oscar Perez Park, 8601 Timberpath; Eisenhower Park, 19399 N.W. Military Hwy. and Stone Oak Park, 20395 Stone Oak Parkway. Recycle San Antonio! - The Parks and Recreation Department is working hard to help everyone go green. You’ll find blue recycling centers in more than 40 City parks and along the greenway trails. We invite you to continue to pitch in as even more locations receive recycling centers in 2012.

Add Culture to Your Life
Whether you aspire to become a professional dancer or you just want to improve your coordination, get some exercise, or have some fun, there’s something for everyone in the Parks and Recreation Department’s dance program. Classes, opportunities to try out for dance troupes, and public performances are offered. Classes are $30 for youth up through age 17 and seniors ages 60 and up. Give Back to Your Community What better way to show you care than by pitching in to beautify your parks? The Parks and Recreation Department’s Volunteer Program welcomes civic organizations, schools, clubs, Boy and Girl Scout troops and interested citizens who wish to help clean, maintain and upgrade City parks. We also assist corporations and businesses looking for employee service projects and have done numerous projects with organizations bringing large conventions to San Antonio. You provide the volunteers and the elbow grease. We'll provide the materials. For more information call 207-2899.
