Summer Food Program

2013 Summer Food Program Lunch and Snack sites

The Parks and Recreation Department continues to make the health and wellness of San Antonio children a priority by ¡Por Vida! Program approved menus. Summer Youth Program participants enjoy recreation-themed activities and a daily free lunch and snack provided through the Texas Department of Agriculture-funded Summer Food Service Program.

The program is offered at Parks and Recreation Department Community Centers, eight Parks and Recreation swimming pools, as well as elementary schools and other area agencies and organizations. The 2013 program will run from June 17 through Aug. 9. Sites will be announced in the spring. Lunches are served around ll:30 a.m.

Pools where meals will be served include Concepcion, Elmendorf, Heritage, Kennedy, Kingsborough, Roosevelt, Woodlawn and San Pedro. Meals will be served from 1 to 2 p.m. at all the pools, with the exception of San Pedro where the time will be 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. All eight pools will offer snacks from 3 to 4 p.m. No sign-up is necessary.

The lunch menu offers increased whole grains, reduced saturated fat and decreased sodium. Children will also be provided two fruits a day in addition to a vegetable with lunch. Nutrition from the new menu exceeds the standards of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Summer Food Service Program.

The program qualifies as a ¡Por Vida! food establishment because it meets rigorous nutritional requirements. Parks and Recreation is the first City Department to attain this status.

Metro Health, the San Antonio Restaurant Association, and the San Antonio Dietetic Association joined forces to develop the Healthy Restaurants Coalition (HRC). The HRC created the ¡Por Vida! Program to help tackle the problem of obesity that plagues the San Antonio community.
