The Department of Planning and Community Development, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Unit exist to aid in the planning and development of the City by furnishing consistently reliable analysis and exhibits in a prompt manner to assist with the decision making process. The GIS Unit provides a variety of services that support the daily business of the City of San Antonio and the customers that it serves. Our primary roles include managing GIS technology, maintaining current base layers (i.e.; City Boundary, ETJ, Council Districts and parcels) along with providing technical assistance, consulting, guidance and training.

San Antonio is ranked 7th largest in the U.S., behind New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia and Phoenix, but ahead of San Diego, Dallas and San Jose. San Antonio moved up from the 9th spot in 2000 to the 7th in 2010. However, San Antonio is the fastest growing city within the Top Ten Largest cities in the nation. Texas Within Texas, San Antonio has moved up a spot on the Top Ten largest Texas Cities list. San was listed 3rd in 2000 and moved up to 2nd in 2010. San Antonio is behind Houston which has a population of 2,099,451 and before Dallas which has a population of 1,197.816. City Population for San Antonio grew from 1,144,646 in 2000 to 1,326528 in 2010, a 15.9% increase, adding 181,882 people to the total population. |
