In 1996, the City of San Antonio established the Public Art Program with the purpose of establishing a process to support San Antonio's long tradition of artist-created enhancements that have contributed to the City's cultural and historical sense of place. Now called the Design Enhancement Office and located within the City's Department of Public Works, the Office serves eleven City departments and many outside partners, including the Texas Department of Transportation, Bexar County, San Antonio River Authority, various neighborhood associations and others.
