Fleet Operations primary responsibility is to control the overall cost of operating and maintaining the City’s fleet of vehicles and to repair the fleet in a manner that extends the useful life of each vehicle.

Fleet Services Operations is set up in six main service areas:

• Police Garage - 1,500 emergency service vehicles
• Central Shop - 1,200 sedans and light duty trucks
• Four Truck Centers - 1,400 medium duty trucks
• Heavy Equipment Shop - 650 heavy duty trucks/equipment
• Parts Operations - $6.5 million in parts and service purchases
• Fuel Operations - 6 million gallons of fuels (unleaded, diesel, propane, CNG)

The service centers generate more than 62,000 maintenance and repair work orders each year. In addition, Fleet provides a full-service paint and body shop, tire, brake and welding shops and three state inspection sites. There are 139 employees responsible for providing these services. Of these employees, 32 technicians hold Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certifications. Our goal is to attain the distinguished designation as Blue Seal of Excellence service facilities. Two specific criteria for attaining this recognition in each shop are (1) at least 75% of technicians performing diagnosis and repairs must be ASE certified and (2) each area of service offered in the shop must be covered by at least one ASE-certified technician.

Parts Operations maintain $500,000 in parts and supply inventory in storerooms situated in each service center. Fuel Operations maintains and operates 14 fuel sites and seven carwash locations throughout the City.

Fleet Acquisitions is responsible for acquiring and remarketing vehicles and equipment for all City departments. Ensuring that each department is provided with a wide range of vehicle resources is important for City staff to perform daily services. Over 4,800 vehicles are in the City's fleet inventory, which is valued at approximately $206 million. Detailed planning enables staff to forecast fleet needs and appropriately schedule, order and maintain inventory.
