Parking Restrictions
State Law
The Texas Motor Vehicle Laws detail various restrictions to parking automobiles. The following is only a partial listing of where it is illegal to park:
- in an intersection, on a sidewalk, crosswalk (marked or unmarked), or railroad track;
- in front of any driveway;
- within 15 ft of a fire hydrant;
- within 20 ft of a crosswalk (marked or unmarked);
- within 30 ft of a yield sign, stop sign, or traffic signal;
- double parking on a street.
Additional NO PARKING ANYTIME Zones
The City of San Antonio establishes additional NO PARKING ANYTIME zones, generally in accordance to one or more of the following criteria:
- where traffic safety and/or traffic mobility goals make it necessary to prohibit parking;
- on residential streets where nearby commercial properties create a condition that leads motorists to park adjacent to nearby residential properties;
- in the immediate vicinity of intersections where parked vehicles have limited, to an unsafe degree, motorists’ visibility of approaching traffic;
- on residential streets where a petition has been received, signed by representatives of contiguous properties, including at least one corner lot.
Special Time-of-Day Parking Restrictions
In addition to NO PARKING ANYTIME signs, the City also installs parking prohibitions that apply only during specified times at selected locations. These include 7-9 a.m. and 2-4 p.m. (school days only) near some schools to facilitate child safety and motorist safety. Another type of parking prohibition is during 7-9 a.m. and 4-6 p.m. on some major thoroughfares to facilitate rush hour traffic.
