Pavement Engineering manages street rehabiliatiton contracts that are scheduled for improvements on the City’s Infrastructure Management Program (IMP). There are four types of paving applications that the division has oversight of: Asphalt Overlay, Asphalt Recycle, Hot Paver Laid Micro-Surface and Slurry Seal. Along with managing the rehabilition of existing streets, the division is also managing some full – depth street reclamation contracts. Pavement Engineering also designs various projects in-house.
In addition to managing paving contracts, Pavement Engineering has oversight of the installation of bus pads and newly constructed wheelchair/curb ramps for contract projects undergoing structural rehabilitation. As a component of monitoring the progress and completion of projects which are primarily located on streets designated as collectors or arterials (high traffic volume streets), staff perform field visits prior to, during, and after completion of the work to ensure that the project has been completed according to the specifications as outlined in the contract.
Pavement Engineering coordinates with the Street Maintenance Division, Right-of-Way Management, and several other entities to ensure that streets are rehabilitated correctly and in the most efficient way possible. In addition, Pavement Engineering serves as a technical resource for pavement specifications and researches new technologies that are environmentally safe for use as future applications.
