SPECIAL ALERT FOR GOLF COURSES AND BANKS:
THEFT OF WALLETS, I.D.s, CREDIT CARDS, ETC. FROM GOLF COURSES

STEVEN RAY WEAVER ARRESTED IN GUADALUPE CO. JULY 23, 2003!!

The individual shown here, Stephen Ray Weaver, W/M, DOB 10-27-66, was arrested on a Credit Card abuse warrant out of Austin.

He is also a suspect in a series of thefts from San Antonio golf courses, where patrons' wallets were stolen while they were playing golf, and their credit cards and I.D.s were quickly used at local banks before they were finished playing.
If you have any information on these theft cases, please contact Det. Clark at 207-7645 .

SPECIAL ALERT: FAKE PRIEST SCAMS + COPYCAT

The two scammers and impersonators shown above HAVE BEEN ARRESTED ON JULY 23, 2003, on Felony Theft Warrants.

George Persyn (at left) and Barbara Persyn (Gomez) (right) have been approaching local vehicle dealers and trying to purchase a vehicle "in the name of the Church." This is a scam (along with many other scams) that the Persyn pair have been doing from San Antonio to Arizona for the past 20 years.
According to recent reports, the Persyns have approached dealerships and auto finance companies, such as GMAC and Ford, and provide false information on their credit applications, including false tax ID numbers. George Persyn presents himself as "Father George Persyn", even though he is not officially affiliated with the Catholic Church. He also claims to be affiliated with various non-profits, including several with the name "St. Anthony" in the title.

Local businesses should be alert to the Persyns and any others who approach them "in the name of the Church" or any other charity or any business.

POSSIBLE COPYCAT: Earlier this year, a second "Priest Impersonator" went into at least one local electronics store and stated he was with a non-profit agency, also called "St Anthony's" (Pastoral Counseling). This scammer, who may have done the same scam on other businesses, provides information about himself on the purchase application, but never pays for the merchandise.

WARNING FOR BUSINESSES: Always verify the credentials and affiliation of anyone with whom you do business, particularly if they are requesting donations or special favors. When dealing with purchases for "non-profit agencies", verify the information before extending credit or allowing someone to take the merchandise without payment up-front.

If you have any information about these impersonators, please contact SAPD:
Det. Penshorn, Special Crimes Detail, 207-4481, or Det. Clark, Prue Property Crimes, 207-8326.

CD THIEF ARRESTED:

SAPD Det. Wong, working with the cooperation of K-Mart Loss Prevention staff, was able to identify, track, video-tape and finally arrest-in-the-act, a woman who was stealing large numbers of CD's from K-Mart stores and then selling them to used CD stores. The suspect, identified as Teresita Gomez of San Antonio, worked as a vendor rep for a company that supplies CD's to K-Mart stores. However, after stocking the CD's in a store, Gomez would take back a large number, conceal them on her person, leave the store, and then sell the CD's and keep the money.
Det. Wong first observed Gomez selling nearly 100 new CD's at a used CD store in June, then saw her doing the same a few weeks later. He tried to identify her through vehicle registration and the store log, but discovered this information was fictitious. After making contact with K-Mart Loss prevention staff, who were able to identify Gomez and her position as a CD vendor rep, Wong and K-Mart conducted detailed surveillance of Gomez while she conducted her thefts at several locations. In addition, Wong, assisted by SAPD's Repeat Offenders Unit (ROP) and the SAPD helicopter, observed Gomez while she sold the stolen CD's at various locations. In September SAPD and K-Mart were able to detain and arrest Gomez in the act of stealing CD's at one of the stores. Gomez subsequently admitted to over $32,000 in thefts in less than a year. K-Mart Loss Prevention was able to produce additional evidence of thefts that may total over $73,000.
Det. Wong is currently gathering and compiling evidence on the recorded thefts and is working with the Bexar County DA's Office to aggregate the thefts into one felony offense.

CONGRATULATIONS to Det. Wong and the K-Mart Loss Prevention staff! This is an excellent example of law enforcement and businesses working together to solve crimes and prevent further losses and crimes from occurring.
