The Night Detectives Unit (also called Night Utility Detectives Unit) is responsible for the investigation of all felony criminal offense investigations during the hours from 7:00 PM to 5:00 AM.
The Night Detectives Unit is directed by Lieutenant Richard Martinez, assisted by two sergeants and fourteen detectives. Night detectives conduct preliminary investigations of major crimes that occur during hours when detectives from more specialized units are not on duty. At the end of the Night Detectives' shift all information related to the investigations is routed to the appropriate unit(s) where specialized follow-up detectives are assigned to the cases.
Night Detectives Unit staff are also members of the Officer Involved Shooting Team. Night Detectives respond to any incident of an officer involved shooting or custodial death which occurs during their tour of duty.
