honors dance program founder Berta Almaguer The Parks and Recreation Department proudly boasts the longest running municipal dance program in the country. The year-long celebration began with BRAVO Hispanico, a dance performance at the Arneson River Theatre in honor of Hispanic Heritage Month and Miss Almaguer and is continuing in March with the Spring Fling at Sunken Garden Theatre. March 20, 2010 - Have you ever seen a gazelle perform ballet or a rhinoceros jam out a tap routine? If not, then the Parks and Recreation Department invites you to experience the wild things as they come to life in the historic Sunken Garden Theatre in Brackenridge Park. Enjoy our Spring Fling with the Wild Things free dance entertainment and family fun event celebrating the Parks and Recreation Department’s 75th Anniversary of Dance on Saturday, March 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 pm.
Pack a picnic lunch or purchase some barbecue while you're there, then prepare to enjoy two hours dance entertainment as you’ve never experienced it before. Families will also enjoy face painting, Japanese Tea Garden tours, information on the Parks and Recreation Department, the San Antonio Public Library, Animal Care Services and other City services, refreshment booths and much more. Bring the family pets and have them micro-chipped by Animal Care Services for just $15.

A Dance Performance in Collaboration with Jumpstart Theatre, the performances
Jan. 15 - 17 featured Parks and Recreation Department dance troupes Alamotion and Fandango with specially commissioned choreographed pieces by Timo Lizano and Carmen "La Chiqui" Linares.
The shows took place at the Sterling Houston Theater, formerly Jumpstart Theatre. Also featured
were live flamenco music and a tribute to dance program founder Berta Almaguer.Flamenco artists
included Jackie Rodriguez, Denise Guerra, Sonya Jimenez, Francisco Orozco "YiYi," and Steve Arispe.
October 6, 2009 • Our Part of Town Talent Show Finals, 2 p.m., Carver Cultural Center. Free. Performance will include the premiere of two contemporary choreographies in collaboration between Alamotion and Fandango dance troupes. It will also include an audio-visual show that will educate the audience on the 75th Anniversary of Dance. November 1, 2009 • Dia de los Muertos. “Vida Nuestra: Altar and Exhibit Show” Altar and Performances in honor and memory of Berta Almaguer. Co-hosted by the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center, 1300 Guadalupe Street. 3 p.m. Free. Multi-dimensional: video documentary with interviews with family, students, and friends of Berta. Video on stage with photos from the 1930, 40s, 60, 70s. Past students who are now teachers will bring in their students on a rotating basis to perform.
