News Release San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department Contact: Kelly Irvin/207-6122 Date: May 1, 2009 Ribbon-cutting marks completion Of first phase of Leon Creek Greenway District 8 Councilwoman Diane Cibrian and Parks and Recreation Department officials will join area residents at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 3, in celebrating the completion of the first 4.25 miles of hike and bike trail on Leon Creek Greenway between Babcock and Bandera Road. The ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held at the Buddy Calk Trailhead near the intersection of Babcock Road and Spring Time Street (near the second entrance of Oxbow Subdivision). The project includes low water crossings, pedestrian access features, retaining walls and signage. It is part of the larger linear park development program along Salado Creek, Leon Creek, Medina River and the San Antonio River. Funding comes from 2000 Proposition 3 Parks Development Funds and Expansion Venue Project Sales Tax Initiative Funds in the amount of $3,372,810. Parks and Recreation Department Special Projects Manager Brandon Ross explained that the greenways will serve all non-motorized modes of transportation, including bicycles, roller blades, pedestrians and wheelchairs. The ten-foot width is minimal for two-directional travel on paths that will share both pedestrian and bicycle travel. ##
