News Release San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department Contact: Kelly Irvin/207-6122 Date: Feb. 2, 2009 Arts program receives NRPA Southwest honor The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s art activities held in conjunction with Contemporary Art Month each year have been honored with the Class I Arts and Humanities Award by the Southwest Regional Council of the National Recreation and Park Society (NRPA). The Southwest Region Award honors the most innovative and effective individual program in Arts and Humanities, defined as a project or program that promotes cultural arts. The award will be presented during the general session of the Texas Park and Recreation Society (TRAPS) annual conference in Austin on Feb. 25. The Parks and Recreation Department has participated in the citywide Contemporary Art Month since 2004, with an exhibit of student art work at La Villita in July. Along with a reception, the Special Programs staff also coordinated a workshop for art students ages six to 14 and supported and participated in an evening of collaborative performance entitled “Merging Modes.” “Our participation offered students and teachers the opportunity to showcase their work to local citizens and visitors,” says Special Programs Supervisor Mona Lisa Montgomery. “It especially provides students with the experience of how art should be displayed and appreciated. Last year participants were as young as six all the way up to 80 years of age.” The three-week workshop explored the medium of clay, the modern techniques of artists such as Andy Warhol and Pablo Picasso and finally collographs, three-dimensional sculpture with found objects.
