Parks and Recreation Department Community Centers offer range of programming, hours

The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department has adopted a new range of programming and hours at its community centers that will be implemented over the next few months. The realignment of services includes Expanded Centers, Regular Centers and Open Play Centers.

Open Play Centers will operate Monday through Friday, 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. Reservations will not be available at these centers. They include John Tobin, Denver Heights, Dorie Miller, Woodard, Bode, Normoyle, South San, and Meadowcliff (hours at Meadowcliff will 2:30 to 6:30 p.m.). These centers will continue to offer the eight-week Summer Youth Program and Summer Youth Program each summer.

Regular Centers will maintain the same operating schedule that they have historically, which means they will be open Monday through Thursday from 2 to 9 p.m., Friday, 2 - 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., during the school year. Summer programming will remain the same. These include Dawson, Fairchild, Father Roman (currently closed for renovations), Harlandale, Miller's Pond, Yates, Palm Heights, and San Juan.

Expanded Centers, which will go to the new schedule in late October, will operate Monday through Thursday, 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Friday, 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. These will include Copernicus, Southside Lions, Ramirez, Cuellar, Garza, and Hamilton.

See the list below for addresses and a locator map. Visit us at the web site in the coming months for more information about programming at all our community centers.

Parks and Recreation offers holiday themed, fun-filled Thanksgiving Camps

Holiday themed arts and crafts and games will be offered at the Parks and Recreation Department’s Thanksgiving Camps.  The camps, for youth ages 6 to 14, will be held at 14 Parks and Recreation Community Centers, Nov. 23 to Nov. 25, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.  The cost is $2 per participant per day.  Participants are asked to bring their own lunch, drink and snack.

“These holiday camps will provide some great recreational and educational activities for children while also providing them a safe, structured environment where they can enjoy their time away from school while their parents are working,” said Recreation Superintendent Brenda Burton.   Centers will be closed Thanksgiving Day and the day after Thanksgiving.

Community Center Summer Youth Program

community center graphic

The Parks & Recreation Department provides a structured supervised program for children at 25 year-around Community Centers located throughout the City. The recreation-themed activities include active games, sports, and arts & crafts! All Community Centers will receive a free lunch and snack for the entire program. The program follows self-monitored guidelines, which will limit the number of participants per site. SYP at Community Centers maintains a 1:25 Staff to participant ratio. Spaces are determined by the size of the facility – 75 to 125 slots. Participants will be grouped according to age and staff will conduct age-appropriate recreation activities.

Time: 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Ages: 6 – 14 year olds only at SYP Community Centers
Fee: Summer Participant fees are based on a sliding scale according to income and family size. See Summer Participant Fee Chart file attached below. If you presume your family will qualify for a reduced fee, an Income Verification Form must be completed.

You may complete the Income Verification process at any of the San Antonio Parks and Recreation year-around Community Centers.
