TAP Outreach Project wins Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS)
Third Coast Rhythm Project is dedicated to the preservation, presentation, education and creation of all aspects of American tap dance and affiliated percussive dance forms. TCRP builds bridges between diverse communities by presenting inclusive, innovative performances, by giving scholarships to deserving San Antonio area youth and by continuing the tradition of cultural innovation through shared experience.
The outreach program is administered and implemented by and through the Special Programs section of the department in conjunction with Third Coast Rhythm Project in a variety of ways to touch as many youth as possible. Two- hour clinics were held in Parks facilities that included approximately 150 youth total at three different sites. The outreach teachers were celebrity professionals in their field assisted by members of the San Antonio based RPM (Rhythm & Percussion in Motion) Youth Tap Ensemble.
Up close and personal, students interacted with well known artists making the outreach especially memorable. Nicolas Young of the touring production of “STOMP” was a favorite among the youth.
Scholarships were provided to two staff dance teachers and two advanced dance students to attend Third Coast Rhythm Project's nationally recognized Annual Summer Festival, polishing their craft with visiting Tap masters. The intention for these scholarship recipients was to bring back to the Parks and Recreation classes choreography and new and innovative ideas to be incorporated in future productions.
The 2008 TAP Outreach project portion of the Third Coast Rhythm Project was funded by the Orsinger Foundation, through the efforts and support of the San Antonio Dance Umbrella, after being introduced to its pilot program in summer 2007.
The 2008 program was so successful that plans are underway to expand future outreach programs throughout the department's community centers with clinics that are several weeks long, as well as a two-month residency with the dance program participants.
