Date: March 8, 2009 News Release Parks and Recreation Department Contact: Kelly Irvin/207-3075 Pager #603-9418 Groundbreaking marks beginning Of Denman Estate park improvement project City officials joined with University of the Incarnate Word Sunday to celebrate the beginning of an improvement project that will turn the Gilbert Denman, Jr., Estate, 7735 Mockingbird Lane, into a jointly used park and adjacent retreat center for the university. District Eight Councilwoman Diane Cibrian, UIW President Louis Agnese, Jr., and Parks and Recreation Department Director Xavier Urrutia joined in breaking ground for the $688,000 project funded with 2007-2012 Park Bonds and Certificates of Obligation. The project includes a .5 mile walking trail, parking, fencing and lighting. The City and UIW have entered into a joint use agreement in which UIW will maintain the property and use the buildings as a retreat center. The City of San Antonio purchased 12.52 acres from the estate of Denman, a local philanthropist in 2007 at a cost of $2,561,081. An adjacent 7.70 acres were purchased by UIW. The joint use agreement provides for cooperative operation of the approximately 20 acres. The design work was done by McChesney/Bianco and Atlas Construction is the contractor. The project is expected to be completed in early September. ##
