Medina River greenway trails
offer great hiking, biking options

Hiking and biking enthusiasts now have one more health and fitness option as the Parks and Recreation Department’s Linear Creek Greenway Development program continues to progress. The Medina River Greenway located in the Medina River Natural Area, 15890 Highway 16 South, is now open for hikers and bikers. The greenway includes 3.1 miles of tree lined hike and bike trails featuring two scenic overlooks along the Medina River, a historic site and pedestrian access features and signage. The trail can be accessed at the entrance to Medina River Natural Area or on Old Applewhite Rd. near the intersection of Applewhite Rd.

“We recently dedicated the first two greenway projects along the Salado Creek and nearby residents and cycling enthusiasts are already taking advantage of the trails and letting us know how excited they are that these greenways have been developed for recreational use,” said Brandon Ross, Special Projects Manager for the Linear Creekway Development Program.

The first two projects recently opened to the public include the Salado Creek Greenway, Huebner Rd. to Blanco Rd. segment, which is accessed near Voelcker Park at 1021 Voelcker Rd. and the Salado Creek Greenway, Loop 410 to Eisenhauer segment, located at the entrance to Tobin Park on N.E. Loop 410 between Harry Wurzbach and Starcrest.

All three projects are part of the larger Linear Park Development Program for Salado Creek, Leon Creek, Medina River and the San Antonio River. Voters approved sales tax funding in 2000 (Proposition 3) and 2005 (Proposition 2) for this purpose.

Approximately 980 acres of property on San Antonio’s creekways have been acquired for the program with another 200 acres planned for acquisition. In addition to land acquisitions, design is complete or underway for approximately half of the projects and four additional trail segments are currently under construction.

The trails on the greenways will serve all non-motorized modes of transportation, including bicycles, rollerblades, pedestrians and wheelchairs. The ten-foot width allows for travel in two directions on paths that will be shared by pedestrian and bicycle travel.
