News Release San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department Date: Dec. 18, 2008 Contact: Kelly Irvin/207-6122 San Antonio Natatorium to close temporarily For mandated upgrades, repairs In order to comply with a federal law that requires new, safer drains and drain covers in swimming pools, the San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Durango, will close Saturday, Dec. 20, for upgrades and repairs, San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department officials announced today. It is expected to reopen on Jan. 20, 2009. Pool safety standards were modified nationally after Congress passed the Virginia Graeme Baker Pool and Spa Safety Act of 2007. This law requires that pools install new anti-vortex drains and covers in order to prevent swimmers from being trapped in the drains. The Parks and Recreation Department wants to do everything possible to ensure the safety of its swimmers. The new drain covers will meet the anti-entrapment safety standards as interpreted by the U.S. Consumer Protection and Safety Commission. According to Interim Director Xavier Urrutia, the down time gives the department the opportunity to make other needed repairs normally scheduled in January. These will include replacing a circulating pump and painting the inside of the pool, dive well, and baby pool.## Comments can be sent to kirvin@sanantonio.gov.
