Parks and Recreation Department
marketing campaign takes state award

A multi-faceted marketing campaign designed by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department to encourage citizens to visit city parks and improve their health has been honored by the Texas Recreation and Park Society (TRAPS) in a statewide awards competition.

The Parks and Recreation Department received the Media Excellence Award for Get Active. Get Fit. Step Up to Recreation!, a marketing campaign that focuses on the physical and mental benefits of regular recreational activity.

The Media Excellence Award recognizes parks and recreation agencies and/or media outlets that provide exemplary coverage or sponsorship of parks and recreation events, programs, facilities or issues.

The campaign kicked off with a pep rally in Brackenridge Park in July 2008 in conjunction with the National Recreation and Park Society’s (NRPA) Parks and Recreation Month.

Included in the initiative were video Public Service Announcements (PSAs) taped by Mayor Phil Harberger, all ten City Council members and City Manager Sheryl Sculley.

Taped in City parks, the PSAs captured City Council members engaging in their favorite recreational pastimes and encouraging citizens to do the same.

“This on-going campaign is a call to action for our citizens to support our parks and recreational facilities by utilizing them to their fullest extent. It focuses on the benefits they will receive in terms of improved health and overall quality of life,” said Janet Martin, Assistant Director of Parks and Recreation. “It calls upon parents to be role models for their children in establishing recreation as a life-long pursuit of healthy lifestyles.”

The campaign also encompasses VIA Metro bus signage, a calendar of July is Parks and Recreation Month activities and other printed materials, street banners, promotional items, a web page, and additional advertising.

The award will be presented at the TRAPS Awards Banquet held during its annual conference in Austin on Feb. 27.
