Summer Youth Program

The Parks & Recreation Department teams up with local school districts in the summer to provide an eight-week, structured, supervised program for children at more than 50 sites throughout the City. The recreation-themed activities include active games, sports, arts & crafts, a weekly enrichment program in art and science and a free lunch and snack program.

The Summer Youth Program utilizes the school's gymnasium and outdoor enclosed areas. The program follows self-monitored guidelines, which will limit the number of participants per site. The Summer Youth Program maintains a 1:25 Staff to participant ratio. Participants will be grouped according to age and staff will conduct age-appropriate recreation activities.

Time: 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.
Ages: 6 – 12 year olds only at SYP School Sites

Fee: Summer Participant fees are based on a sliding scale according to income and family size. See Summer Participant Fee Chart file attached below. If you presume your family will qualify for a reduced fee, an Income Verification Form must be completed.

• 2007 Federal Income Tax Return and W-2 Form
• 2008-2009 School Free or Reduced Lunch Qualification Form
• Social Security Income Documents
• TANF Documents, Food Stamps, Medicaid, and/or Chip award documents
• Any other Public/Government Benefit Award Documents
• Notarized Employment Verification Document

Requirements for Family Size Verification: (all that applies)
• Original Birth Certificates/Adoption documents for ALL children in the family
• Original & Copy of Guardianship/Power of Attorney Documents (notarized)
• Marriage Certificate (to determine lineage of child)
• Court Orders
• Foster Care Documents

NO CHILD WILL BE TURNED AWAY DUE TO INABILITY TO PAY THE FEES REQUIRED.

The SYP at School Sites Mass Registration will be held in late spring 2010.
Requirements for Registration are the following:
• Parent/Guardian must be present
• Original Birth Certificate of participant(s) • Original & Copy of Guardianship/Power of Attorney Documents (notarized)
• If applicable, the approved Income Verification Form. This form must be completed prior to the SYP Mass Registration.
• Cash or Money Order; made payable to: City of San Antonio

Teen Connection Summer Program

Teens can stay physically active and involved at  Teen Connection sites during summer. Free supervised recreational program with gym activities available for teens ages 13 - 18. Hours vary, depending on the site.
 

Community Center Summer Youth Program

The Parks & Recreation Department provides a structured supervised program for children at 25 year-around Community Centers located throughout the City. The recreation-themed activities include active games, sports, and arts & crafts! All Community Centers will receive a free lunch and snack for the entire program. The program follows self-monitored guidelines, which will limit the number of participants per site. SYP at Community Centers maintains a 1:25 Staff to participant ratio. Spaces are determined by the size of the facility – 75 to 125 slots. Participants will be grouped according to age and staff will conduct age-appropriate recreation activities.

Summer Nutrition Program

The Parks and Recreation Department sponsors a Summer Nutrition Program funded by a U.S. Department of Agriculture grant at more than 75 sites each summer. Food is served at summer youth recreation sites and other agencies throughout the summer program. High quality meals similar to those served during the school year by the National School Lunch and Breakfast Programs are offered free for youngsters ages 18 and under at the pre-approved sites. Meals are usually served around 11:30 a.m. and snacks at 3 p.m. Children do not have to be registered at the site in order to participate in the Food Program. Check back for Summer 2009 information.

This program offers a safe, supervised free open gym program. The recreation-themed curriculum includes active games and sports. Monday through Friday during the summer program.
