Feb. 8Public input meeting to discuss proposed improvements to Hillside Acres Park. 6:30 - 8 p.m. Miller's Pond Community Center, 6075 Old Pearsall Road. Feb. 8The income verification process opens for the 2010 Summer Youth Recreation Program. Parents wishing to utilize the sliding fee scale based on income are invited to complete the income verification process by coming to the Ron Darner Parks and Recreation Operations Headquarters, 5900 Old Highway 90 West, between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. The verification form must be completed prior to registration, which will occur in April, details pending. The program will run June 14 through August 6, from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at more than 40 sites, including schools and community centers. School sites are open to children ages 6 to 12 and community centers, ages 6 to 14. For more information, call 207-3000.

Feb. 20Community Chili Cook-off. The public is invited to enter a favorite chili recipe in the Granados Adult and Senior Center Chili Cook-off. 1 p.m. No entry fee. All types of chili are encouraged from vegetarian to venison. Chili must be brought to the center already cooked and in a crock pot. Prizes will be awarded to the top three chili recipes. March 1Registration opens for the fourth annual Underwater Egg Hunt scheduled for March 27 at the San Antonio Natatorium, 1430 W. Durango. Open to youngsters ages 5 to 12. March 20Spring Fling with the Wild Things. Have you ever seen a gazelle perform ballet or a rhinoceros jam out a tap routine? If not, then the Parks and Recreation Department invites you to experience the wild things as they come to life in the historic Sunken Garden Theatre in Brackenridge Park. Enjoy our Spring Fling with the Wild Things free dance entertainment and family fun event celebrating the Parks and Recreation Department’s 75th Anniversary of Dance 11 a.m. to 1 pm.

Pack a picnic lunch or purchase some barbecue while you're there, then prepare to enjoy two hours dance entertainment as you’ve never experienced it before. Families will also enjoy face painting, Japanese Tea Garden tours, information on the Parks and Recreation Department, the San Antonio Public Library, Animal Care Services and other City services, refreshment booths and much more. April 10Herbs for the Garden, Kitchen and Bath presentation. San Antonio Botanical Garden, 555 Funston Place. 9:30 a.m. - 1 p.m. $43. Offered by herbalist, horticulturalist and designer Diane Lewis, who will discuss the herbs best suited to this area. Find out how to cultivate, harvest and store them and learn how to make a relaxing tea blend and bath salts to take home. You will also tour the herb garden. A $10 food fee payable to the instructor covers cost of herbal tea, bath salts and an herbal-based sack lunch. Admission to the gardens included in the cost of the class. July 4July Fourth Celebration and H.E.B. Fireworks at Woodlawn Lake Park, 1103 Cincinnati. 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Families are invited to celebrate their freedom with a fun-filled day featuring games, food, and musical entertainment and an explosion of fireworks during the city's official July Fourth celebration. Children of all ages are invited to participate in the colorful Salute to the Red, White, and Blue Parade beginning at 11 a.m. Entertainment continues throughout the day and is capped off when the fireworks light up the lake at 9 p.m. This free event is sponsored by the City of San Antonio and the San Antonio Parks Foundation.
