Hearing slated on proposed renaming
Of Levi Strauss facility for Ronald R. Darner

The Parks and Recreation Department will conduct a public hearing at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 7, at the Cuellar Community Center, 5626 San Fernando, to consider a proposal to rename the former Levi Strauss & Co. facility, 5800 U.S. Highway 90 East, for former Parks and Recreation Department Director Ronald R. Darner.

The San Antonio Parks Foundation submitted the request to rename the facility, which will serve as the Parks and Recreation Department’s operations headquarters when it opens later this year.

Darner, who began his career with the Parks and Recreation Department in 1967, took the helm as director only five years later at age 30 and served in that capacity for more than 20 years. He died in 2005.

Under his tenure, dedicated park land nearly tripled. Voters approved numerous park bond initiatives for new community centers, and his aggressive pursuit of federal and state funds made possible the renovation of many parks and recreation facilities. Among the major projects were the San Antonio Botanical Garden and Lucile Halsell Conservatory, Emily and Albert Friedrich Wilderness Park, Eisenhower Park and the beautification of the Paseo del Rio (River Walk).

Citizens are invited to submit their opinions and comments to City of San Antonio, Parks and Recreation Department, P.O. Box 839966, San Antonio, Texas 78283.

All comments will be considered by the renaming committee, including Councilwoman Herrera, before a final decision is made.
