Become a lifeguard or an instructor… Instructors are vital to developing the important life skills of swimming through the delivery of quality aquatic programs in the community. They provide fun, enjoyable swimming lessons for people of all ages, while focusing on safety. Experienced lifeguards and instructors can have a variety of employment opportunities such as pool managers, pool supervisors, and advanced leadership instructors. Frequently Asked Questions: Q. What qualifications do I need to become a lifeguard? A. You must be a strong swimmer. The Parks Department will provide CPR and Lifeguard training. You must be 16 years old or older to apply with the City. You must be at least 15 years old or older to take the lifeguard class. Q: I already have training. Do I have to take the courses again to work for the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department? A. Your lifeguard training is good for three years. Your CPR training must be updated each year. Lifeguard are tested each year to make sure they still know their skills.
Q: What is the work schedule and pay?
A. 35-40 hours a week. $8.75 an hour.
Classes are offered at the City of San Antonio’s Natatorium (1430 W. Durango). 210-226-8541 Classes are free as long as you work for the City of San Antonio. *Purchase of Book ($35), Pocket Mask ($10 ), are necessary. A Certification Card ($5) will be charged in class.
