Bicycle Patrol
One of the more unique and enjoyable assignments in the San Antonio Park Police is the Bike Patrol. The San Antonio Park Police Bike Patrol Unit consists of 28 officers and their supervisor, Sergeant Daniel Martinez. The Bike Patrol Unit is a specialized position appointed by the Chief of the Park Police, upon the recommendation of the Bike Patrol Supervisor and the officers shift supervisor. After passing a Bike Patrol physical fitness examination, candidates must complete the San Antonio Park Police' 40-hour Bike Patrol certification course. Successful candidates are issued the appropriate equipment and appointed to the Bike Patrol Unit. Bike patrol teams patrol selected parks, the River Walk, and HemisFair Park. They are valuable tools for patrol. They provide an officers presence, by way of patrol, in areas that were not accessible to patrol vehicles in the past. Areas such as hiking and bicycle trails are now safer than they once were. Bike Patrols can be used to augment foot and vehicle patrols to saturate areas where citizens report problems. They also lend themselves to outstanding public and community relations activities. Bike Patrol Officers are routinely used at community events and school demonstrations. The San Antonio Park Police Bike Patrol Unit has voluntarily participated in several fund raisers and educational events, such as the Pacific Care Kids & Cops program, the American Heart Association Heart Walk and the Stand for Kids Walk.
