Internships
Park Police Badge

In response to an identified need to provide local Criminal Justice curriculum students at the collegiate level with an opportunity to participate in an internship program consistent with their academic requirements, the San Antonio Park Police Division has entered into development of an internship program to provide real-world experience to interested and qualified students. The SAPPD, recognizing that an internship program has already been developed through the Volunteers in Policing Program at the San Antonio Police Department, has developed a joint partnership with the San Antonio Police Department in expanding the base of participation available to local students currently pursuing a Criminal Justice degree plan.

In pursuing the establishment of a joint partnership in reference to internship opportunities, many benefits can be realized for the stakeholders in the program-- The San Antonio Police Department, The San Antonio Park Police Division, The San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department, and the various Colleges and Universities which offer local students a curricula in Criminal Justice and Law Enforcement Training.

The program is designed to provide an environment for students pursuing Criminal Justice undergraduate degrees with actual organizational experience in a unique law enforcement agency.

Program Benefits

The advantages of developing the Joint Internship Partnership Program are many and are mutually beneficial to all entities concerned.

  • For the Academic Institutions that may become involved, the Joint Internship Partnership represents a broader base to place students in internship assignments, essentially creating more opportunities to help each student fulfill their degree program requirements.
  • For individual Criminal Justice students, the Partnership will allow expanded access to program placement, while offering a wider range of work experience in a law enforcement agency whose mission represents a significant variation in law enforcement applications and practices.
  • For the SAPD, the Partnership creates expanded program development and participation and increased public exposure in Policing Education issues, while minimizing direct supervisory oversight of interns involved in the program.
  • For the SAPPD, the Partnership represents access and inclusion to a proven Internship Program and eliminates the need to duplicate services and administrative overhead, while utilizing the benefits of student involvement and participation without capital cost outlays.
