Parks and Recreation Department Adult and Seniors' Programming Get fit -- senior style at Lion's Field and the Commander's House! - New!
The newest exercise activity at both centers is Yo-Tai, a combination of yoga and Tai Chi. At Lion's Field this class will be offered every second and fourth Tuesday of the month, beginning Tuesday, March 11. At Commander's House, Yo-Tai will be offered every second and fourth Thursday of the month, beginning March 13. Hours are 1:30 to 3 p.m. and there is no fee to participate.
Lion's Field offers a free daily exercise class, featuring a warm-up, aerobic exercise and cool down, Monday through Friday, beginning at 9 a.m. The fitness room is also available during the week from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Line dancing for exercise is also available during the week from 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Arthritis Foundation exercise class is offered free on Wednesdays and Fridays from 11 a.m. to noon. Lion's Field also offers a Matter of Balance class that focuses on fall prevention and includes exercises to improve flexibility, muscle strength and balance. This is an 8-week program that begins again on Wednesday, March 26, at 1:30 p.m.
As part of the Fit City initiative, body analysis will be offered at Lion's Field every second Wednesday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon. This offers adults and seniors an opportunity to track their weight and review individual fitness programs with YMCA staff who will maintain their records and offer exercise and nutrition tips. The body analysis machine reads body weight, body mass index (BMI), body fat percentage, fat mass, lean mass and total water weight.
The art of T'ai Chi Chih, a series of 19 movements and one pose, is a six-week class offered quarterly at Lion's Field. The cost is $50 and the next session begins Monday, April 25. Hours are 10 - 11:30 a.m. Tai Chi Chih improves circulation, balance and energy as well as providing for improved physical fitness, flexibility, stamina, longevity and quality of life. Instructor Terry Gay Pucket will lead the class.
At Commander's House, one of the most popular exercise routines is the Walking club. Members enjoy the scenery and fresh air along the San Antonio River Walk and in the King William area. The club hits the sidewalks on Tuesdays and Fridays from 8:15 to 9:15 a.m.
Both centers require an annual $5 registration fee and the majority of the programs are free unless otherwise noted.

From games to a book club to road trips, there’s something for every active senior offered at the center.
Holiday luncheons are a special treat offered throughout the year on occasions such as Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, just to name a few. Regular groups meet at the center monthly for bridge, canasta, Rummikub and bunco. Other participants jump into classes that include stain glass, crochet, knitting, quilting, oil painting, drawing, tap dance, flower making and chair exercise as well as guitar, percussion and choir. Fees vary according to class and pre-registration is required. The center offers a safe driving classroom refresher course for people 50 and older every other month on the last Monday and Tuesday. The class is good for auto insurance discounts. Pre-registration and payment of the $10 fee are required one week in advance. Open to anyone 21 years or older. Reading is a pastime loved by many who participate at Commander’s House. Join the Book Club for great reading and discussion. It meets the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Drop ins are welcome and there’s no fee. If you’d rather listen to a great story. Check out Stories Galore, a wonderful story hour held from 5 to 7 p.m. every third Sunday of the month. It’s free and open to story lovers of all ages. A featured storyteller provides traditional tales, folk stories, cultural stories, scary, historical, factual or fiction. Other programs include Seniors on the Road and other special events. The center also needs volunteers to asset with service meals, and making favors and table decorations.
Lion's Field Adult & Senior Citizens Center
Lion's Field offers a wide array of classes and programs, including exercise classes,
travelogue programs, ceramics, bridge, sculpture and mosaic classes. You might take an
exercise class on Monday, arts and crafts or bridge on Tuesday, learn about the world at a
Travelogue on Wednesday, take line dancing on Thursday and play pinochle and bridge on
Friday. The center is also home to the San Antonio Chess Club, which meets every Thursday night at the center from 6 to 10 p.m. Special events and meetings occur frequently, including local neighborhood associations and civic group gatherings as well as a variety of gardening and related groups and even ukulele and hula performances. The center also offers a physical fitness room that is available for use during regular hours. Included are a treadmill and stationary bicycles. The center has an active advisory board that helps to plan activities. Also an
historic facility that has been a San Antonio landmark since 1925, the building got a park bond-funded
new addition in the form of a multi-use room, in 1998. In the past the center has hosted the National Senior Olympics and annually has a
Christmas Arts and Crafts sale on the first Sunday in November.
