The Commander’s House provides a wide array of programming for people 50 years of age or more. From games to a book club to road trips, there’s something for every active senior offered at the center.

Commander's HouseAt hot home-cooked meal is served on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays at noon. Offered in partnership with H.E.B., the meal includes a main entrée, salad, vegetable, dessert and coffee or tea. The cost is $3 and a reservation is required. Informative or entertaining programs often follow the meal. Every last Wednesday of the month, people with birthdays or anniversaries that month are honored with a musical presentation and cake.

Holiday luncheons are a special treat offered throughout the year on occasions such as Easter, Cinco de Mayo, Mother’s Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas, just to name a few.

Regular groups meet at the center monthly for bridge, canasta, Rummikub and bunco. Other participants jump into classes that include stain glass, crochet, knitting, quilting, oil painting, drawing, tap dance, flower making and chair exercise as well as guitar, percussion and choir. Fees vary according to class and pre-registration is required.

The center offers a safe driving classroom refresher course for people 50 and older every other month on the last Monday and Tuesday. The class is good for auto insurance discounts. Pre-registration and payment of the $10 fee are required one week in advance. Open to anyone 21 years or older.

Reading is a pastime loved by many who participate at Commander’s House. Join the Book Club for great reading and discussion. It meets the third Thursday of each month at 10 a.m. Drop ins are welcome and there’s no fee.

If you’d rather listen to a great story. Check out Stories Galore, a wonderful story hour held from 5 to 7 p.m. every third Sunday of the month. It’s free and open to story lovers of all ages. A featured storyteller provides traditional tales, folk stories, cultural stories, scary, historical, factual or fiction.

Other programs include Seniors on the Road and other special events. The center also needs volunteers to asset with service meals, and making favors and table decorations.

Lion's Field Schedule of Activities - May

Lion’s Field is truly a multipurpose center! It offers a wide variety of classes and programs, including exercise classes, a monthly travelogue, ceramics, printmaking, Bridge, dominos, Mah Jongg and a host of other classes. You might start with an exercise class on Monday morning, join the bridge group that afternoon, try an arts and crafts project on Tuesday, play Mah Jongg on Wednesday, enjoy listening to the Ukulele players on Thursday, and be creative in a painting class on Friday. Classes are small enough to get to know other students and to receive attention from the instructor. The San Antonio Chess Club meets at the Center every Thursday evening.

Classes are small enough to provide good socialization with others and individual attention from instructors. Special events and meetings occur frequently, including local neighborhood associations and civic group gatherings as well as a variety of gardening and related groups and even ukulele and hula performances. Other musical offerings are scheduled such as acoustic music and Ukulele jams. AARP Defensive Driving classes are offered every other month.

The newsletter details the daily schedule of classes and programs and gives information about future offerings.

Holidays and special occasions are celebrated with more music and good food throughout the year. Lion’s Field is open from 7:30 a.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. Monday through Friday. There are often special Saturday events as well. The Center celebrates its Anniversary each July with An Open House and Reception along with a Student Art Show.

Lion’s Field Annual Membership is still only $5! Many programs have no charge. Others have only a charge for materials. Some classes with outside instructors do have fees but attempts are made to keep these as low as possible.

The Center has a strong focus on health promotion. Informational presentations on a variety of health-related topics are scheduled regularly. Physical activity is particularly encouraged with daily exercise classes. The Center has recently added a Boston University-developed program for falls prevention, “A Matter of Balance”.

The Center has an active advisory council that helps plan and support activities and classes. A part of Brackenridge Park’s history, the original 1925 building is a San Antonio landmark. This now serves as the Center’s Game Room and is only one part of the enlarged facility.
