Hearing slated on proposal
to rename Medallion Natural Area
for Fay and William Sinkin

The City of San Antonio will have a public hearing at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 30, to receive comments on a proposal to rename Medallion Natural Area, 7711 High Mountain Road, to the Fay and William Sinkin Nature Preserve. The meeting will be held at Clark High School Cafeteria, 5150 DeZavala Road.

The recommendation to rename the 145.5-acre parcel came from District 8 City Councilwoman Diane Cibrian in recognition of the Sinkins’ lifetime of work as environmental advocates and their devotion to sustainability.

Fay Sinkin has been dubbed “the mother of aquifer protection,” having served on the Edwards Aquifer Authority for more than 20 years. In addition, she formed the Aquifer Protection Authority in 1974, which developed support for the sensitive Edwards Aquifer Recharge Zone.

Bill Sinkin has been a community activist here for more than 70 years. He is founder and chairman of Solar San Antonio, a nonprofit organization created to make solar power a tangible energy source.

Bill Sinkin was also one of the founders and first president of HemisFair, the 1976 World’s Fair held in San Antonio.

The renaming committee will hear comments for or against the proposal and then make a recommendation to the City Council.

Citizens may also mail their comments to the City of San Antonio, Department of Parks and Recreation, RE: Renaming of Medallion Natural Area, P.O. Box 839966, San Antonio, TX 78283-3966. Comments must be postmarked on or prior to the public hearing date in order to be considered.
