The Parks & Recreation Department’s mission is to provide exceptional parks, facilities, programs and services to improve the quality of life for all. The Adapted Sports & Recreation Program provides recreational programs and adapted sports activities for both youth and adults with physical and intellectual challenges to assist in meeting this mission. The program strives to increase social opportunities, help individuals function as independent as possible in a recreational activity, and to develop a higher level of physical, mental, and emotional well being.
Adapted & Wheelchair Sports are offered year-round focusing on individuals with physical challenges and intellectual challenges. This program offers classes, clinics, and recreational experiences in the following: Wheelchair Football, Wheelchair Softball, Basketball & Wheelchair Basketball, Cycling & Handcycling, Wheelchair Rugby, the Al & Christina Trevino Adapted Golf Program, Adapted Sailing Outings, Tennis & Wheelchair Tennis Clinics, and a Fitness Workout Room at the Lincoln Community Center. A fee of $10 per sport for the year is required with registration. Other sports offering include: Special Olympics Texas sports and competitions, collaborations with local school districts, and sports programming for wounded warriors recovering at BAMC.
During eight weeks of summer, an Adapted Recreation Day Camp offers a variety of recreational activities suited for teens ages 13 to 19 with physical challenges or developmental/intellectual challenges. The fee for participation is $10.00 per week; sessions run M-TH; advanced registration and payment is required. Participants must be able to function in a community group setting; staff to participant ratio is 1 to 8.
