What is F.A.C.T.?

The Family Assistance Crisis Team (F.A.C.T.), established in December 1991, is a collaborative, community project responding to victims of family violence. In 1995, F.A.C.T. became part of the Victims Advocacy Office of the San Antonio Police Department. Since its beginning, more than 1400 F.A.C.T. volunteers have been trained to offer crisis intervention services to victims and their families.

Volunteer Assignments

Trained F.A.C.T. Volunteers can request daytime or nightime assignments.

DAYTIME : Daytime opportunities are at both the Family Justice Center and SAPD. Volunteers can choose to serve at the Family Justice Center Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am till 5:00 pm. Job duties include greeting clients and assisting with initial paperwork, helping clients get to the correct offices, making follow-up calls, assisting with Crime Victims Compensation applications, and other tasks that arise. Volunteers are asked to work at least eight hours a month at the Center.
There are F.A.C.T. volunteer opportunities during the day at SAPD headquarters and at SAPD substations. Volunteers work with a caseworker to follow-up on cases, make outreach calls, and other tasks that need to be done.

NIGHTIME : F.A.C.T. offers volunteers a unique opportunity to work one Friday or Saturday night a month, from 7:00 pm to 2:00 am at a substation. Volunteers are available to provide crisis intervention services for clients coming in or calling for assistance. Volunteers making this work choice are asked to make at least a six month committment.

How to Volunteer for F.A.C.T.

To volunteer with the F.A.C.T. Program, you must be at least 21 years of age, have no criminal record, and be able to work the given hours. Qualified applicants must also complete the 17-hour F.A.C.T. Training Program and attend the Volunteers in Policing (VIP) Orientation.

F.A.C.T. Training Program

Training for qualified applicants consists of three sessions: two all-day Saturday classes, and one 3-hour evening class. (A team of multi-disciplinary professionals from the community provide the training.)

FIRST DAY : The morning's training is on the dynamics of partner abuse, while the afternoon is given to learning or enhancing active listening skills.

SECOND DAY : Representatives from various community organizations present information on their agency and how they can help victims of domestic violence. some of the agencies represented are the Family Justice Center, the Battered Women's Shelter, the Rape Crisis Center for children and adults, and SAPD Crisis Response Teams (CRT). The basic expectations and logistics of volunteering with F.A.C.T. are explained.

THIRD DAY : The final evening is devoted to developing skills through practice.

NOTE: Volunteers must attend all three sessions to complete their training.
