POLICE DEPARTMENT
ALAMO CITY HEAT BAND
|
 |
The San Antonio Police Department utilizes an
innovative method for conveying the "Say 'NO' to drugs and
gangs and 'YES' to education" message to elementary school
children. The SAPD rock band, ALAMO CITY HEAT, uses
popular music and close, personal contact with the audience to reach
out to the children.
Founded in 1988 within the Community Services Section, the
band is composed of SAPD officers who spend a portion
of their annual schedule working with the Band and a portion
as patrol officers, working in the field. Current Band members ( shown
in the photo below, L to R)
include Officers Larry Norman (Vocalist), TJ Stout (Keyboard),
Melissa Turner (Vocalist), BLUE BEAR,
John Sanchez (Rhythm, Guitar), Robert Barrera (Drums),
Juan Mandujano (Rhythm, Guitar), and Steve Ornelaz (Bass).>

BAND ACTIVITIES :
The Band performs at a wide variety of functions, including
schools, parades, city functions, and other venues to share the
anti-drug, anti-gang message with the community. "Alamo City
Heat" performs not only within the city of San Antonio, and the
surrounding area, but also throughout Texas and the United
States. The Band has performed as far west as San Diego,
California. Performances in Texas include the cities of
Gonzales, Rockport, and Corpus Christi.
REQUESTING HEAT PERFORMANCES :
Schools and other organizations can request performances
by the "Alamo City Heat". The minimum performance requirements
for the Band consist of (1) an event oriented to
convey the anti-drug, anti-gang message to an audience of
elementary-school-aged children or otherwise approved by the
Chief of Police or Community Services Section Commander, (2) open
to the public free of charge, and (3) the ability to meet
the necessary logistical requirements for the performance.
Indoor performance arrangements are preferred, due primarily to
equipment considerations. Requests for performances that do not
fall within these parameters are considered on an individual
basis. Additional requirements are necessary for out-of-town
performances. All requests are considered on a "first come,
first served" basis and are subject to the approval
of the "Alamo City Heat" Coordinator, the Community
Services Section Commander, or the Chief of Police.
