ASSIGNMENTS

SAPD patch

Upon graduation from the San Antonio Police Training Academy, graduating officers are placed on probation for a period of one year.

The probationary officer is assigned to a Field Training Officer Program (F.T.O.) for a period of 17 weeks.

Upon successful completion of the F.T.O. Program, assignments are made to the Patrol Division on the varying shifts and geographical areas.

After completion of the required 52-week probationary period, officers bid for relief days and work assignments. Some of the assignments may include:

Uniform Patrol
Uniform Traffic
Foot Patrol
Bicycle Patrol
K-9 Unit
Crisis Negotiator
SAFFE Officer
Helicopter Detail
SWAT **
Crime Prevention Specialist
School Services Officer
Bomb Squad
Street Crimes Detail
DWI Unit

PLEASE NOTE: Although you may be eligible to apply for specialized units after the 52-week probationary period, senority is a factor in selection for these units.
** SWAT requires pre-qualification.
