The San Antonio Police Department investigates and
maintains records on ALL Sexual Assault Offenses reported
to SAPD, including
rape and attempted rape of adult and juvenile females, rape and
attempted rape of adult and juvenile males, indecency with
a child, indecent exposure, and other related offenses. In the
table above, the category of "ALL SEXUAL ASSAULTS" includes
all of these sexually-related offenses. [Please note
that not all victims of sexual assault report the crime, or
report it during the year it happened. It has also been estimated
that, nationally, 1 out of 10 females and 1 out of 25 males
will report a sexual assualt at sometime in their lives.]
"UCR FORCIBLE RAPE" : The Federal Bureau of Investigation
compiles yearly statistics on selected crimes that have occurred
in most U.S. municipal areas, and publishes
this data as "Crime in the United States : Uniform Crime
Reports". These are the "UCR" statistics most often cited in
newspapers, etc., in discussions of "major crimes." "UCR Forcible
Rape" counts ONLY the "carnal knowledge of a female forcibly
and against her will," which the FBI further defines as forcible
vaginal penetration by a penis. The age of the female victim
DOES NOT matter, and rape of juvenile females IS counted. So-called
"statutory rape", or underage consensual sex, is NOT counted. Please
note that the FBI is NOT saying that non-UCR sexual assaults are
not serious. More than 3 decades ago, the FBI selected this narrow definition as a "leading
indicator" crime that would provide historical and geographical
consistency of criteria.
"% of "ALL" THAT ARE UCR" : This is the percentage of ALL
the Sexual Assaults reported during the listed time
period that met the criteria for "UCR Forcible Rape."
