Community Policing:
CITIZEN PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS

SAPD offers a variety of ways for community members to work closely with the police through organized programs and individual activities. Listed below are descriptions of the ways San Antonio residents can form partnerships with the police to make their neighborhoods safer places to live.

ACTIVE CITIZEN PARTICIPATION PROGRAMS

Cellular on Patrol (COP) Neighborhood residents patrol their streets, using cell phones to report crimes. Ride-along and Training at SAPD substations.
Citizen Police Academy (CPA) 11-week class to inform and educate citizens about the SAPD and police work in San Antonio. Held at SAPD Academy. Includes Ride-along. 207-6262. Active CPA Alumni Association.
Volunteers in Policing (VIP) Opportunities to assist SAPD with duties ranging from clerical to roof-top surveillance. 207-3319
Family Assistance Crisis Teams (FACT) Trained volunteers work weekend evenings at substations to assist victims of family violence.
PROGRAMS FOR STUDENTS & YOUTH:
Police Explorers For those age 14-20 interested in police work.Contact Substations
SchoolServices: Call your substation to have Community Policing officers visit your school.
Police Athletic League (PAL): Call 207-7393 for information on PAL sports programs for youth.
CRIME PREVENTION
Special Crime Prevention Web Page: Learn tips to safeguard your person and your property. Schedule crime prevention surveys (residential or business).
Neighborhood Watch: A program to involve neighbors in watching for criminals and safeguarding property and residents.
HEAT (Auto Theft): Help End Auto Theft. Register your car with HEAT.
McGruff (Crime Fighting Dog): Contact Substations to schedule Crime Prevention presentation for children.
National Night Out: Annual Event: A "Night Out Against Crime", scheduled for the first Tuesday in October each year.
PROGRAMS TO ASSIST CRIME VICTIMS :
Victim Advocacy Program Counselors work with victims of violent crimes. 207-2141
Family Assistance Crisis Teams (FACT) Civilian volunteers who counsel victims of family violence. 207-2136
SAFE Family Program On-line directory of services and resources for victims of violent crimes, particularly family violence. 207-2136
Crisis Response Teams (CRT) Teams who work with both victims and perpetrators to diffuse family violence. Contact Substations.
VINE Program Notifies victims of domestic violence when assailant is released from custody. 270-6292
HELP THE POLICE SOLVE CRIMES:
SAPD Most Wanted Most Wanted felons with current warrants for Murder, Sexual Assault, Robbery and other crimes.
Crime Stoppers Call 224-STOP to anonymously report criminals or wanted persons. Rewards available up to $5000.
Missing Persons Printable posters of missing children and adults.
SAPD Cold Cases Web page with details of unsolved homicides and other major cases.
SCAM-NET Info on current scams; photos of wanted con artists.
Business Against Crime: BATNET Info on current crimes against businesses; photos of wanted forgers, robbers, and other criminals.
